Merging two bedrooms

Hi Houzzers

We have two bedrooms and a tiny shower on the top floor which we are keen to merge.

We're doing this to ensure we make the best use of the rooms. Both rooms are quite tiny, and one of them is very dark which still has our stuff when we moved 7 months ago! The shower is also tiny and the hallway is a waste of space. What are your thoughts on the following?

1. Should the entrance door be on the same floor or the floor below.

2. Is it a good idea to install a velux cabrio balcony window to capitalise on the view?

3. I'd like the light coming from wall C to feed through to the floor below and possibly the bedroom. Thoughts?

4. How does the proposed floor plan look? Would you do it differently?

Red lines are what we intend to break through
Yellow highlights is the ensuite, is it big enough and should i extend it to the dormer? Where else would you put the the shower/toilet?
Do I need a partition between the stairs and the room or should i leave the banisters?
A is facing a main road
B is the party wall
C is external facing another house
D faces the garden

Any advice will be much appreciated and sorry about the diagram, i was using my fingers to write on the screen and it wasnt my dog writing...

I would put the door on the floor below so you maximise the space in this room. It will give better illusion of space as you won't have a partition wall where the current balustrade is. Also you may want to consider not having a window in the en suite and keeping the maximum levels of nature daylight into the room. If you were able to relocate it to where it says "c" you would have a bigger sense of space at the head of the stairs which would be more of a statement.

thanks Mimi. c is too tiny for a toilet unfortunately.

with the door, we thought I might be "weird" to have a door below hence our hesitation.

Any chance you can turn the stairs at the top to create more room for the ensuite?
Alternatively can the WC move to the opposite side of the house? Is there another toilet and therefore soil pipe you could feed into?

I think the two rooms together will make one generous bedroom. The key is finding a way of accommodating a reasonable ensuite.
If you could turn the stairs at the top landing then you could make the existing shower room bigger by extending onto the landing.
If it is possible to move the wc then consider the enclosed.
Personally I think a landing at the top of the stairs is to be expected and a door at the bottom of the stairs makes the entrance to this bedroom less impressive.

hi Jonathan, thanks for commenting.i never thought of having the shower there, so thanks for that. I'll consult the plumber this evening if we can fit the shower there given wall c is where the pipe need to get to, crossing the stairs.

as for the door, we want to keep the light from the window by the stairs coming in. so, we're still deliberating over it.

Keeping the soil pipe to the front left:- two options depending on how big you want your bedroom space:-

You could fill in the window in the dormer and put a shower in the space.

Or, go for a smaller bathroom with a shower bath leaving a spacious bedroom.
