I would suggest staining them, as painted oak doesn't tend to look good a couple years down the road.

Many are simply doing new countertops, sink and backsplash that compliments the oak. This first kitchen is a cottage style - French Country - it may not be your style but shows the effect of new counters, sink and backsplash.

Both kitchens benefit from pretty hoods and farmhouse sinks.

You may do whatever you like, but keeping the cabinets as they are and treating them as vintage is one option. The first kitchen did have refinishing done on the cabinets and if you have areas of wear this can be done too.

Trying to keep up with trends is difficult and expensive.

Painted cabinets are losing popularity. Dark cabinets didn't have very much popularity to begin with, except with a very modern aesthetic. What is rising in popularity is good quality medium toned wood cabinets. Walnut. Quarter sawn oak. Lightly stained maple. Natural cherry. Cabinets where the simple high quality wood is the main feature of the kitchen without the need for embellishment.

What do you like? What type of budget do you have? For me I was very tired of the golden oak very yellowed cabinets. I did not want for my middle class home to spend $$$ to change them to something else. For us we went the professionally sprayed painted route. I love my new white cabinets. It has really lightened and updated our kitchen. Personally I do not like farmhouse sinks or that look so it was not something I would do. Ours is below.
