Congratulations on your new place. Since curb appeal is important to you, take some time to find some great inspiration photos that have red brick and reddish tan roof.

I suggest painting the fascia board and gutter to match the roof. The garage doors and downspout should match the overall brick color so that the overall look of the house is not dominated by the color of the garage doors. I would remove the shutters for a few months while the rest of the clean up is going on. Then you can decide if you want them.

For the wood siding, try matching one of the slightly darker red bricks for new paint. For the windows, use the same reddish color. A brighter alternative would be off white for wood siding and all trim. The shutters could be black or a dark Charleston Green.

When you scrape and prime the siding, prime the shutters, too, because that will give you a clean clear new color choice if you do choose to put them back up. Check with a masonry pro to see if pressure washing the brick is okay or would damage the brick.

A lot of potential! That brick is pretty dark and limits some of your design choices. Look into staining the brick - can update and/or lighten the color while still allowing the brick to breath (so no bubbling or peeling). Good luck!

Emmarene has some good suggestions. Since you're missing a shutter already, I would go ahead and remove them all. Cleaning up the yard is going to make a huge difference.

Your original question is about garage doors. I would look into finding a color similar to the mortar. That will tone it down quite a bit, without giving you glaring white garage doors. You can also match them to the trim color you choose, of course.

I would pick a color that matches your mortar for your trim, posts and garage door. Do something a few shades darker in your sided gable. I would also beef up the posts and square them out so they're more appropriate to the style of the house. A medium blue/green will brighten up your front door and bring it out of the shadows. I think you should remove both the tree near the house as it's too close to your roof and the smaller one to the right of the large one. As Emmarene suggested, limb up the larger one so more of your house shows. I would leave off the shutters as well. Painting the downspout to match the brick will help it disappear. Some fresh landscaping, a brightly colored pot on the porch to plant seasonally and painting the bench will be a big improvement as well. I agree that adding a newer, more modern porch light and numbers will also help. I think that for less than $1,000, you can totally change the look of this house. Lovely that you will be keeping the family home in the family. First, determine the style you'd like your home to be. It's obviously a ranch home, but do you want it to be casual and welcoming? Modern with a minimal look? Look around for inspiration homes on-line before you decide. Also consider a lovely walkway from the front entrance to the public sidewalk in front. Currently it appears the only way to the front door is via the driveway. Congratulations and good luck!
