Are you sure you want to invest time and effort in a cabinet that only holds a small screen TV?

I agree with Beverly. I would have a new one built (or buy one ) more in the style you want.

It's hard to make a color suggestion without seeing the rest of that room and the other furnishings, as well as what style of decorating you like. If you're not looking to replace it, would you consider painting the unit white, off-white, or black? Would that work? I live in New England where muted colors like a barn red or Colonial blue-green could be used. It all depends on what you like, how it compliments your room, and the style you want. It's tricky to tell with just one photo and how colors appear online, but I'd try painting before replacing. (And the space doesn't really look cluttered.) Good luck!

Maybe a white or off white... or the color of your trim. Is the top a wood stain? THat might look nice restrained dark. But it's hard to tell without looking at rest of room. WHite might look too stark. IF so, definitely something that doesn't scream out from rest of room. Maybe a pale yellow-gold or taupe.

What color are your walls? HOw about going several shades darker or lighter than your wall color?
