Thanks for your comment. Yes, I was thinking in the beginning with slate color paver but pavers are not that big piece so I'm a bit worried that it will look too busy...

Black would really hold the heat in. . . Doesn't seem like a great choice. Plus makes me me think asphalt (in large areas). Photo of the space would help you get better advice because what I am imagining may not even be close.

There are quite a few more modern look pavers in large formats. They just tend to be pricier both in cost of product and installation. (e.g., Unilock Artline and Umbriano large format). There are a ton of others.

I have pavers in my very contemporary landscape. There are tons of choices / colors to choose from. I had all my concrete removed .... I would suggest a lighter color paver, DON'T even think about black, unless you like sitting on the surface of the sun.

I suggest a paver in a large module/shape

we redid our pool deck a year ago and had automatically decided on replacing the concrete with pavers. but then we looked and looked for pavers that were neither plain flat squares nor overwrought faux looking stone. then our landscape contractor realized the price he had quoted for the pavers we could live with (not too dull, not too overwrought) didnt include labor which is of course a large part.

we redid with concrete, and i'm so very glad we did. it looks so clean and modern.

i think many paver styles popular today will look hellishly dated far before they look ready to be replaced.

You can get stamped concrete that looks like pavers. Pavers are a pain in the a** if you live in a climate where you get frost/snow. No matter how well you prepare the ground you are going to get shifting and weeds.
