How about pulling sofas closer, adding an ottoman (safe for little ones) placing the pattern rug in living room as well as the wood shelves which you can place the tv. on. Wicker baskets on the shelves can add texture and conceal some of the toys. Black skinny curtain rods mounted very close to ceiling with simple drapes would soften things up. Light over the dining table needs to be lowered or replace with something cool and inexpensive (black) from Home Depot. Art could go on dining room wall. Cheers

I do not know what else is going on but perhaps the sofa facing the dining room could be placed facing the tv. or at least put a sofa table behind it so you are not looking at the back of a bare sofa.

Not much room to put a sofa table behind, in the DR area. The place is tight. I am considering giving away the ivory couch and just keeping the sofa bed and putting it under window.

The two sofas are arranged in what is known as a waiting room configuration. They are so far apart you need to shout to hold a conversation. I would like to see them maybe with one at a 90 degree angle to the other one. Maybe a small, square table at the corner so you have a place for a drink or a light. I would keep your window treatments close to the same color and tone as the walls but with a nice texture. A larger cabinet or even an armoire would give you great storage and add some height to the room. Please consider using a TV wall mount. It is much safer when there are children in the house. A small table and a chair for your little one would give him/her their own space and could maybe keep toy clutter down. When you are hanging the artwork, put it at eye level when you are seated in the room. Art that is hung too high looks silly. Keep the frames light weight and don't use glass to keep it safer with your toddler. Before you know it, he/she will understand that it is hands off and will not pull it down or "look with their hands, not their eyes" and then you can invest in some serious frames. Don't overlook the beauty and texture of fabric art. I have framed pieces of beautiful fabric to bring color and texture to rooms for some clients. It is inexpensive, too. You can even stretch pretty fabric over an inexpensive canvas frame found at a craft store for a quick DIY project. A few throw pillows and maybe an inexpensive rug in front of the sofas will add some color as well.

I was wondering about the shelves moving that same way into the living room area. I know....a pain to clear off and move it all. I think it would make the tv feel more at home on that wall, too, as the current piece is rather small. That piece might work as a fun serving cart in the dining area.

Thanks, @1ace. We tried putting the sofas at a 90 degree angle but they got in the way of the entry door. It is a tight place. I'm not sure there is more room for more furniture there but we have three nesting tables on the far side of one of the sofas.

It will be your work out for the day, that is for sure. Put the baby to bed, pour some wine and start moving. It will be a gratifying job when it is done....easy for me to say, I know.

May I also suggest that the items on the window sill get moved at the same time to clean up visually that side of the room, too?

Is the table fragile and needs the cloth on it? I keep thinking it would look so nice not covered as it looks like a pretty set right there. I realize the two couches are different sizes, but if the dark couch and the dark table were not right by each other, that might feel more balanced, too. Could the two switch places?

Ikea's Stockholm would give you closed storage and would be tall enough to keep little hands away from the TV. Pillows from West Elm, slipcover from Target.

I just got a very reasonable rug at Ollies. A friend told me about it when I told her I needed a rug. I got a 3x5 with a rubber back for $19 (tax included). Also she suggested Job Lot.

A table for couches might be nice, and possibly of a height for a child to use. BUT a round one - too many bruised kids out and about..I have gotten rid of some antique blinds [wood] in living room - grime, broken cords, have to adjust slats by hand, lets in too much draft from equally rumpled glass window. I needed shorter curtains to clear the ugly and chipped, askew, too many paint layered radiator behind the screen. Ikea has good selection, seem decent quality for the price, $14 for a quite wide pair. No cords, of course - not good with toddlers.

Hello, We moved the bookshelves last night. Apologize for the dark photos (it is early morning, before everyone wakes up). I like it. Will Mount The TV today and put up artwork in the coming week. I also posted a photo of our entry door. It is a tight space 22feet by 15.5 feet with entry door very close to this area.

Any possibility that the keyboard can be moved? Another room or even behind the brown couch so it isn't seen. Easy to turn around a dining chair to play. White cabinet that the TV was on by door after you center white sofa.

Can you make an L out of the sofa and loveseat facing your bookcase wall? It looks like you may have room if you put the smallest sofa against the window... It would create a little bit of a hall at the front door, but it would open up the area between the dining and living spaces.

Personally not such a fan of where the books are now (but you are the one that has to like it, not me)

You might try grouping the books by cover color, if you want. It will visually be more restful and actually makes it easier for little ones to find books.

Is your dining table square? One of the photos it looks rectangular. If so, you might try turning it.

Use your little white cupboard in the dining area for your plants. If you have a longer piece of wood (an old shelf, perhaps?) you can screw it to the top to create a bigger surface....I think they would look good grouped together.

Thank you, all! Great to work together on this!!! Can't move the sofas in a L shape; there is simply not enough clearance. The space is 22 by 15 feet and is tight. The bookshelves look better there, yes. Will work on the slipcover and thinking of replacing the rug. The one we have is pretty shabby.

About slipcovers, definitely. A lighter color on the largest piece of furniture you have there would make a huge difference. I love the appearance of duck or canvas, but they are heavy, a real pain to take to a laundromat or distant apartment laundry room. A denim or quilted fabric might be a better choice?

Is your kitchen door to the right of the table? Now that the bookcases have been moved [nice] would it be possible to move the table back to the wall, making enough space for an L-shaped couch arrangement? Or an L shape using a chair, love seat or ottoman? If you decide to remove light color couch can you sell it? Craigslist perhaps? You might get enough to purchase other seating. A love seat, 1 or 2 chairs, or ottoman might fit better in a 15' wide room and also be more adaptable should you move in the near future..

Would alternate seating be a more sensible investment than a new rug? Layering rugs is "trendy" right now, and you have 2 other rugs, one in the dining area and the rug protecting the dark couch. I am not sure if one can layer over a shag rug, but it's worth a thought. My living room is also too narrow for a couch, my budget equally narrow, so I have 2 inexpensive "temporary" Holmsel chairs {Ikea, $70 each} opposite my comfy chair and ottoman. Probably not temporary since I like them in front of my "grand circle" display [a long long year on layaway, filled with thrift store glass - no toddlers near that, please].

I think the solution is to sell the ivory couch, put a slipcover on the brown sofa bed and get two side chairs. I kinda know that but for the sake of my marriage, I might put it off. I don't want to rock the budget at this moment.

Moving the table would mean it is not centered with the light in that room, which I think is important. I think this room has totally changed already and anxious to see what the art hung does now.

If you have lots of art, maybe you can create a gallery wall like Grover did for you! FUN!

18 inches between an ottoman and the couch is the suggest distance. So if you figure 36 inches with both couches included, 55-36 is a storage ottoman that is 19 inches wide. You can maybe fudge a half inch if you find a 20 inch.

Moving forward ..... but moving the table? Abbyjean noticed the chandelier, and commented that your table should be directly beneath it. I agree. However, the white cloth almost becomes a focal point - and there are better ones in your room. I would wait until art is on the walls and a slipcover has been chosen and then consider a compatible solid color. If your youngster is still at the messy, throw-it-on-the-floor and everywhere else stage, a muted print might be a better choice? Best would be a vinyl cloth - I have two really pretty ones for picnic tables while camping. wouldn't hesitate to use them in my living/dining room if spills were common.

Ahh, good point about the tablecloth. We are probably still at the vinyl stage. LOL

before I read the comments I thought you should move the bookcase and have the TV on it. glad you did that, think it looks great. move the white stand you had it on to beside your entry door it should be about the right size to place things as you come and go. add a mirror above for last minute checks out the door. I think if you switched the coaches the darker one would move the eye around the room kind of extending the dark of the bookcases. the lighter one as the divider between living dining will help light up the room. table really does need to be centered under the light. can you move the keyboard under the dining window to give you a view? agree... no tablecloths.

I don't know about swapping out the couches because the smaller one is the sofa bed and it is cold under that window. Maybe when guest aren't visiting we can do that. Silly, I know but one of those functioning caveats for the room. Great visual catch, though. Thanks for thinking of it.

Moving a sofa bed, if it is heavy as the two I have had, especially when you are getting ready for guests, is a daunting prospect. How long is your brown couch? Could it be backed up to the dining area, with 2 side chairs along the window wall ? A nice L shape, good for conversation too. You would need a comfortable pathway to the kitchen [a minimum of 36", but if you are carrying a baby or toddler, 40" sounds better. So if one arm of an 8' couch is 3.5 feet from the right wall side = 11.5 feet. leaving a space 3.5 feet from the window wall.for a couple of side chairs or one chair at right angle to the couch, the other facing the couch with a table between. Someone please check my arithmetic; I am stuck at 3rd grade level in math]. Actually, lots of possibilities .... how I wish my computer skills would allow a simple drawing!

if you are planning this room as a guest room also, I would recommend getting blackout curtains. using drapery panels mounted so they stack completely outside the window opening will give you the most light and keep the windows looking large, bringing in color and texture to soften the look. think outside the box... table cloths. shower curtains and sheets can be cheaper options than curtain panels on large windows. you just use drapery ring clips on the rod. they make it real easy to open and close. I wouldn't worry about the sleeper under the window especially if it wont be used often. experts say we get a better sleep in a cold dark room. I have family that sleep with a window open all year here in Montana. even if you don't switch the couches, it should be centered under the window.

One last option for your arrangement-switch the bookcases to under the window, put the sleeper on that wall and float the white sofa facing the TV. It looks like the top of the bookcase is lower than the window and you can still have the gallery wall above the brown sofa. Once windows are dressed with panels, it will really cozy up the room.

Daria, yes....if the top of the bookcases aren't higher than the window sill-including all of the books on top. Place the TV at an angle on the far left close to the front door so you aren't looking at the back of it from outside.Once you put up some drapery panels, it will mask the TV even more. Buys you some extra time until you can make some purchases. You have to decide what is most important to you based on your budget...Drapes for both windows, new chairs, new TV cabinet with some enclosed storage, coffee table, end table with lamp, toss pillows..

I love the bookcases and TV in current position. bookcases under the window would be okay but you should not place a tv or anything else for that matter on it if it would be visible from outside and block the light and view from inside. inside the entry is also not preferred if you see the wiring from the side when you come in the door. you seem willing to move things around so it doesn't hurt to try all the suggestions. it is your room and only you can know what will work best for your family. you may find that you like a couple options and can move things around if you just feel like a change.

A bigger TV console, like you see in our design pictured, would really help your space.
