Singer feed dogs stuck down

I've just bought my first sewing machine, a Singer 4423. It's brand new, but already has a problem. I'm mechanically inclined, so before I send it back, I want to see if there's an easy fix for this. When I lower the feed dogs, I'm unable to raise them again with the switch. Inside the bottom panel, there is a black plastic ring. It looks like the spring is supposed to press it to the right, which raised the dogs. But this black piece is sticking to the metal shaft. If I push it to the right using my finger, then the dogs raise and it works fine. But next time I lower the dogs, they get stuck down again. The shaft seems to be lubricated, and I can't see why the black piece doesn't want to slide.

I have a Singer Ingenuity, so depending on what your using this may or may not be relevant. In order for me to push the feed dog switch back the other direction, I need to press the switch DOWN and OVER.

STOP! Send it back, because trying to fix a machine under warranty voids the warranty.

If it NEVER worked, it was probably assembled wrong and you don't want to go there.

With some machines you have to start to sew before the feed dogs come back up. But if you think it's not working properly take it back as lazy gardens said.

I did try turning the knob a few times, but that piece still does not engage. I guess I'll have to return it.

Do you have the presser foot in the raised position when you try to bring the dogs back up? I have a Bernina and a mid century Singer. Neither will let the dogs raise unless the presser foot is in the raised position.

Just a thought.

I have the same problem, but the first time I put them down was 8 years after I bought it. I cant get them back up and dont know what to do. Help?

Hi - same problem - I bought a 4411 3 years ago and never moved the mechanical switch over to lower the dogs until today. Now it won't raise them. I've turned the wheel but still the dogs are still stuck in the down position. Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks!

I can't get the very back of the cover off to look at the broken dog feed. It no longer raises. Can you assist? Youtube only helped get the front of the cover off :)
