7 ft high doors instead of standard 6-8.

Does it worth to go with 7 ft high doors instead of standard 6-8. I know it will cost more for materials, but is it still considered as a special order product?

When we are renovating a project that has 8'-0"H ceilings we always use 8'-0" doors. We move the headers/supports into the attic area allowing the floors and the ceilings to continue from room to room without any breaks. We currently have a project under construction where the ceilings are 12'-0" throughout and our metal/glass interior doors are all 12'-0" in height. Not any interruptions between the ceiling and the floors as everything flows from one room to the next. So, taller doors are an option on every project you just have to allow for them in the construction process.

"Stock" is a relative term. Door manufacturers make many sizes and stock them in standard widths and heights. Distributors have smaller inventories and retailers rely on distributors and manufacturers for just in time deliveries. Most "big box" stores will have a very limited selection on hand...then you are special ordering...never a good idea from those guys.

If your looking to pick it up off a shelf, then no it typically will not be available, however that said, we order 7' high doors all the time and they take no more time to receive than a standard 6'8. They are more expensive tho.

It is amazing what those extra 3" cost in a door, but I agree that they are worth it and it is amazing how it changes the proportions in a room.

Well, I think it's actually a 4" difference. I prefer 8' doors.

8'-0" doors work all depending on ceiling heights. The biggest issues I have is depending on header heights for the exterior windows you have now have another element in that elevation. At least with 6'-8" doors or 7'-0" doors you have windows and doors aligning. But, again it all depends on what your ceiling heights are.

Proportion relationship to other elements nearby, need to be considered. I like taller doors, but may not fit the design aesthetics.

Oellian, if my ceiling height is 8ft and I'm replacing all the windows and doors in my house, should I replace them all with 7' doors? I have an upstairs so I can't raise my ceilings I cannot do 8ft doors but the ceiling height is my pet peeve. I desperately want the ceilings to appear higher. I do have a 12' pitched roof right in our entryway and in PART of my kitchen before you walk into the yard so it all doesnt feel so closed in. Im renovating the whole house, so this is my chance. Thanks for your advice.
