You say "are buying", so this is not your furniture, correct? How about on a stand in the corner to the left of the fireplace? Yes, it will block the window some, but live with it for a year and see what you think. If then you still decide to place it on the wall, you may indeed want to remove the fireplace as the previous poster suggested.

I agree this is not a good place to mount T.V and do you really need a “fireplace” BTW going to a huge T.V will look very odd above that fireplace and these fireplaces do not look good with a mantel. The Besta system from Ikea is a great way of using that wall for T.V

if that's a vented gas fireplace the entire wall above fireplace will get very hot. I would not put the TV over it.

it would be nice to be able to lower the fireplace just enough put a TV above (maybe not a 60"). Try to find out the manufacturer of the fireplace and what they recommend for distance to a TV.

Is there anyway someone could mock-up what it would look like with a small mantle a 12-16" above the fireplace with a large TV mounted above that? I am having trouble visualizing it and don't have the photoshop skills for it.

How high is your ceiling ? How wide is the fireplace ? If you could squeeze a tv above a mantle your flatscreen will be touching the ceiling.

Is this the only living space? because I'd really be looking to get the TV into a different room -- there's basically not enough space above that fireplace for a TV and there doesn't seem to be another appropriate wall. Do you have a family room or office elsewhere? otherwise, agree that fireplace will have to go.

Notice how the fireplace is placed for perfect viewing while seated? That's where your TV goes.

Other than lowering the fireplace like this ( see rendering below ) I don't see the large tv that you want fitting in this space.

We haven't moved in yet. If we wanted to move the fireplace how much is that usually? If it's gas then I imagine they have to move the gas supply line as well as exhaust vent down. Would this be difficult? Seems like moving it down is our only option (other than putting it in corner) since we want a TV in the room.

I wonder if you could move the fireplace to the dining room in between those two windows? That will give you the entire wall for a tv and console underneath for the electronics. What size is the room? There are general measurements for the size of the room and the tv size for optimal viewing.

1. Find the distance between the eventual location of your television set and the location where you will sit

2.Divide your viewing distance by the number three. The number you are left with is the minimum size of an HDTV that you should be. For example, if your viewing distance was 96 inches the minimum size of your television set would be 32 inches.

3.Divide your viewing distance by the number “1.5.” The number you are left with is the maximum size that an HDTV can be and still fit comfortably in your room. For example, if your viewing distance was 96 inches the maximum size of your television set would be 64 inches

Daniel Behrman I think lowering the fireplace would be the best option and if it is gas the line is there already so I would imagine that it would be easier and less costly to shorten a line than it would be to extend it. I really don't know how much but the fireplace does look the best on that wall and it's really the only wall to put the tv unless you start covering up windows which would be a shame to do. I would get an estimate and go from there.

Thanks, I think we will be doing that. I am hoping we can do it for a low-ish price. Seems like I need 12-16" above the fireplace to put a mantle and then I'm hoping to put a speaker or sound bar above that with the 70" TV above that. Hoping we can mount with ability to pitch the TV down since it will be higher than I would prefer. We currently have 21" below the fireplace and 47" above so seems like we could lower it down 10" and that will give us 45" above the mantel to put a TV. 70" TVs look to be about 37" high without a stand so that gives us 8" space from the roof... Still pretty tight
