Kitchen Island

The kitchen island I am planning will have a sink and dishwasher and hopefully enough room for a few bar stools. I like the idea of having the island just one height (counter) so I can spread out a newspaper etc. while eating. But I also like the idea of having a "bar" height to hide the sink mess and essentials. Would it look okay to have the "bar height' just behind the sink and stop at the seating area? I could not find any photos with an island split in this manner. The entire island is approx 6 foot.

72'' is insufficient space to do what you need. You need 36" for a sink, and 27" for a DW and end panel. Then you need another 24" for the other side of the sink. With no overhang on a short side for seating, you are already well beyond 72". Each seat requires 24"-30" of space and 15" of knee space. Then there needs to be a minimum of 42" for a working aisle, and 48" for a traffic aisle around the island.

You need a much bigger island to perform the takes that you envision. And a bigger kitchen. And all at the same height.

do you have pictures of your kitchen or plans? Can the sink and dishwasher go somewhere else?

I can increase the length of the island to 90 inches and still have 40 inch walk ways on either side. I intended to put the stools on the back side of the island so I would not need space on an end. Still not enough room? I appreciate all your comments!

90" seems plenty long. How much width do you have to work with? And yes, the split look you suggest sounds like it would look dynamite.

Don't ever do a double height island. It halves your usable work space and hides nothing. Have 2 dishwashers, and use them, if you don't want a messy island.

But the best solution is to put your cleanup zone elsewhere than center stage in your kitchen. Make that a great prep zone instead, with a small prep sink.

My sister has a single level island between the kitchen and casual dining area. The fridge and range are behind her and the sink/dw is on a separate wall. She wanted a bit of separation between cooking prep activities and guests at the bar. She placed a shallow wooden drawer set (about 6" high - I think it sat on a buffet or desk at one time) on top of the island. It hides the activities from the rest of the room, the small drawers are useful and it can be removed at any time. The wood tone matches her cabinets and it looks very nice.

Maybe you can have a custom piece made to serve your needs for separation?

Thanks for the comments, I like the idea of having "drawers" of some sort for hiding the sponges, soap, etc. I am pretty tidy, so not worrying about dirty dishes being exposed. As to total kitchen size, it will be u shaped with an island between casual dining and kitchen. The approx size of the kitchen is 11 ft deep and about 18 wide. We are still in the planning stage so can still be somewhat flexible. It is an all steel barndominium so we can be flexible on room sizes.

This one is counter-height and table height, but I like the look.
