I would go with the gray on the bottom. The white is a bit too feminine and I think the upholstered bed will be difficult to keep clean as well as more difficult for your boys to make neatly. If you can get them in twin extra long, they'll be able to sleep in them comfortably for a lot longer than just regular twin. If they don't have side rails to cover the box spring, consider buying double size bedding so the bedspreads are long enough to cover the box spring and then you won't have to worry about bed skirts.

If it's a small room, I'd stay with the off-white of the other. This wall is darker, and they chose darker.... but there'll be ways to add interest, or boyish things still?

My son had lots of books; lamp; clock radio etc that was good to have within arms reach. For more storage, consider a headboard like this (Walmart), so you can trade up as he gets older.

Love your painted stripes! As a mom of two boys who are now both in college, I have a few reactions to the ideas already shared. Since they are sharing a room, the bookcase style headboard that Barbara posted will give them each a little personal space, that they can easily customize with their own treasures. And you will like that also, because it will tend to contain their random smaller possessions a little more than a traditional nightstand would. I also agree with the comments about skipping footboard or fancy upholstered base. For now, if they like to jump, those add extra places for potential bumps and injuries. And for now for you and later for them, it will make it simpler to change the sheets. The twin XL is not a bad idea either. My older son does in fact now have his boyhood bed in his first apartment, and it would be nicer for him to have those extra inches. And for that same reason, I would also tend away from the white. As biased as it may sound, white furniture suggests nursery or girls room to me. And even my college age daughter balked at her off-white furniture once she reached her teens, she felt it was too childish. If you don't want to go with a gray that is so much in trend right now, consider getting unfinished headboards that you can paint, and coordinate with your nice stripes. They they could also be repainted in the future.
