We just purchased a property last summer with a beautiful fig tree - perhaps Texas everbearing. We are in Atlanta Zone 7B.

We noticed some mushroom sprouting out from the tree. So from reading online it seems like it was important to cut off .. so we did today .. just right under the mushroom growth. However it looks as if the damage might extend beyond that .. so the questions is do we need to cut back to the trunk of the fig .. or can we just observe?

I believe that area here may still be mushroom damaged? (dark brown)

Also, we seem to have many areas of the fig with the bark off the tree .. the question is does that need to be removed? The areas seem half dead and half alive still carrying viable branches.

If we were to cut out everything damaged or diseased, it would probably be more than half the tree, maybe 2/3. I heard you should never cut more than 1/3.

We are new to gardening .. happy for any suggestions, links or youtube videos on how to save the fig. Really it was very productive last year... so maybe we are doing too much?
