How did you end up with leftover quartz? Most fabricators sell finished tops, not slabs.

Every place I went to we purchased by the slab. Our job needed two slabs to finish and we have left over material which they can try to sell for me or we can use.

Wow! That is a lot. I think if you are not going to use it in your bathrooms, laundry room, etc. then I would sell it. I don't think I would add more to the kitchen, But, I would need to see it first.

Can you show us finished pics of the kitchen?

Shannon, it looks so nice! Put up white paper and get several samples of tiles and stand them up on the wall so you can see how they will look. Leave them for several days and see how they look in the light at different times during the day.

I think white or grey tiles with matching grout will be the best. The new crackle finish grey is pretty.

Looking wonderful Shannon. I know this has been a "journey" but you have done an outstanding job. Take a look at tilebar.com if you haven't already. They have amazing tile selections and you are sure to find some you like. Glass tiles in the gray might be good because of their "reflective" qualities, but I would be tempted to keep things white and light. You can always add color with a few counter items in stainless or a color from your flooring!

Wow I haven't seen that website those are great. We found some cool glass tiles but the reason we are looking at using the slab is for potential cost savings and also we wouldn't know what to do with all of that slab left.

Lucky you! If your home is MidCenturyModern, just go with it! Light walls, medium-stained cabinetry with flat fronts, spring- release doors or fabulous hardware, those gorgeous floors, stainless steel , colorful counters (you can substitute squared-edge Quartz for the MCM Formica counters), sliding windows, cabinet-front dishwasher, Scandinavian chairs around the breakfast table.

I understand your thinking on the slabs as backsplash however, make sure your understand the cost of "fabrication and installation" because it could exceed materials and labor for tile. Just think about "total cost of ownership". Do the math, because sometimes we "think" one thing, but when we actually work the numbers, it isn't as low cost as we think. So, just do the homework and either decision will look great. I am not a fan of the quartz as backsplash because of grease spots that could become problematic, but you can decide if you cook and spatter a lot (like me! lol) or not.

Any advice on hardware for cabinets? We have simple lighting and stainless steel appliances and sink. I love the idea of modern gold but not sure if it will clash. Maybe black...brushed nickel is the obvious choice but I want to make our simple shaker cabinets come alive. Here's a pic of what I would like but really don't think it will work because everything else is silver. Let me know!

I love the idea of running it up the walls instead on tile. As Flo said, it will create the illusion of more space.

When you walk into your kitchen, do you want your hardware to take center stage? If you use black or ORB or even modern gold, you will be highlighting each and every door handle and maybe the hinge if you aren't using the slow close ones.

I chose to use satin nickel with a back plate. I always felt like the back plates saved my cabinets from finger nail nicks. Especially the painted cabinets.

For your kitchen, (and while I love the golds and I think I suggested it a while ago, somehow, I just don't see it in your kitchen. Perhaps some interesting silver with a little modern twist. Here is a handle I love because it is distinctive, but not overdone, and clothing won't catch on it like on the popular bar handles.

Is there any rule of thumb for knobs vs pulls? Don't people do a combination of both? One on drawers and the other on cabinets? Or can you do one on all? Thoughts?

Generally, knobs on doors and handles on drawers. However, you can do either mix or all the same. Just depends on the look you want. Knobs tend to be more simple look, handles a bit more contemporary look, depending on the handle you select. The one I posted walks the line between contemporary and I consider it more "transitional". The straight "rod" type pulls (handles) have become very popular in modern contemporary kitchens and create nice "lines" and clean look. But, they now have been kind of "overdone", so you can do basically whatever you wish. Just understand once holes are drilled, you are stuck with that configuration for a long time. Hope that helps.

The water and food is the issue but I know some people do this with this super high quality paper what do you think? They are saying we don't have enough quartz for our backsplash now.

No to the wallpaper, although if you want to save money, just paint it until you are ready for tile. We waited a year and don't regret doing it OR waiting.

Your kitchen looks like it may offer the opportunity to tile to the ceiling? It is much more impactful and luxurious if you can do it. My kitchen is doubling as a brewery right not but this is what I mean.

There are some wallpapers that could work, but they are fairly expensive. I would just paint with a satin finish and wait until you can do a great backsplash you love.

A bit dirty but you can get the idea.... now I need some ideas to give the outside a refresh! This is an old 1955 Florida home.. I would like to give it new paint and new shutters and a new door (we like the idea of a wood door but are open to anything). We will also get a new roof sooner then later and I will def refresh the landscaping. Would love some ideas!

Shannon for some reason I wasn't getting any posts from your thread until today. Your kitchen turned out very nice & I love the floors!!!!! Great choice!!! And I did see your questions about wallpaper. I have a friend who did wallpaper and he sealed it with a marine spar polyurethane. It still looks as good as it did 12 year ago. He used 3 different patterns and tore them into pieces and sorta decoupaged them on the walls. It was awesome and very unique!!! He always comes up with great ideas!!

Beautiful result. I can't tell you how much I envy you those floors! As to the exterior, I would remove the shutters and go full tilt mid century on the outside. A wood door with windows as well as a mid century garage door. Frosted or reed glass can provide privacy while letting in the light. You could also add a low horizontal wood planter to the front gable end and fill with horsetail, snake plants, agave, yucca and grasses. If you're replacing the roof, I would use a standing seam metal roof.

An address plaque like this would look amazing by your front door. Along with a mid century light fixture.

Well you could go old school Florida ranch instead. Either way I think a metal roof is the way to go. Here's an original rendering and floor plan of a 1950's ranch plan called Starlight.

Then I think you're looking at pastel colors, brick planter, flat panel garage door, painted front door.

Ok so I’m back. We took some time off and now we are moving on to the exterior and actually doing an addition. You can see in earlier posts what the current exterior looks like but now we have changed the front elevation and just need some ideas on finishes and color combos etc. I will attach a blank pic of what the new front will look like then a few renderings. The second pic actually shows the bedroom window has been elongated to match the new floor to ceiling double window in the front now it’s just a matter of us figuring out what finishes to use. The last pic is the blank with me drawing in some things. I’m not sure if we should go flat tile or metal although I’m leaning flat tile. Also I thought about adding some wood elements but I’m not sure how much I like it in the second image. For the garage we will either go wood or glass garage door similar to the front door in the second and third pic. Would love to see some ideas! I’m thinking I should make another fresh post for exterior ideas for people who don’t want to go down this journey and read this again. Thanks for any input!

I just read the whole thread. One, your kitchen came out fantastic! We all envy your terrazzo floors and I think the white cabinets did them justice.
I would start a new discussion for the outside questions. Some people are better at the outside design and you want to get their attention.
I love that you did an addition and new elevation. Great ideas!
I am about to rip my entire front landscaping so I’ll be interested to see what people suggest to you.
