I recommend you find a new chest of drawers with a less "bedroomy" feel, add a more updated mirror above it, and change out the art you have on the wall to the right with a large canvas print for a more updated feel.

This is a fun area to decorate. I'm a big fan of painted furniture, and would put a dresser with color here; for instance, a main color from the adjacent room or kitchen. A lower dresser (three instead of four drawers) with a longer mirror above might be a nice change. Create a vignette with items like a nice family picture, lantern, and/or clock on the surface, then add seasonal touches, a bunny or bird figurine in spring, something with a flag for summer, pumpkins in the fall, snowman in winter. Pull items from other rooms and play around with them to see what looks interesting to be displayed here. When you walk in the front door, you should have the subtle feeling, oh! That looks nice! Have fun with it.

The area is all squares and rectangles. An oval shaped mirror would go a long way to adding interest. You could go with a sleek dresser with updated hardware and add a slightly ornate oval mirror. If you really want to keep the existing mirror, hang it so it is diamond shaped. You want to break up the rigidness of so many corners everywhere, make it more relaxed looking; a nice feeling when you come in the door.

I'm not attached to the mirror! Oval is a good idea. I can change the rug too they're both just cheap target finds :)

i'd choose what you like and what fits well. its hard to see the dresser AND the adjacent rooms at the same glance, not like its in the room with them.

Good point teamaltese. This is my favorite so far in green... too many colors? Not that it matters but my rug in the adjacent room has the dark red and sage green in it (it's the pottery barn brandon rug)

Michelle I like that idea - it's how I found this piece in my dining room! That was 4 kids ago however I just don't have time (or patience to shop with kids :) these days.

I think the sage dresser is great. What's really nice about the color, beside that it's carried over from in the rug in the other room, is that it looks nice in every season. Soft on the eyes yet it'll brighten up the corner and make it more of a focal point. Btw, a simple round mirror could work same as an oval.

As Michele suggests, local thrift store (or garage sale) finds are fun to look for and it is amazing how a coat of paint and updated hardware transform a piece. Especially these days with the chalk paint that is so popular. And could be a lot cheaper.

I like the green too, Kim. I like that it pulls color from your other rug. I'm sure it will be simple to find a new rug for your entry that works.

White board and batten would look great in your entry and up the stairs. Run a picture ledge down your hallway.

I think this sea salt paint color would look good above white wainscoting and would go with the teal in your pottery barn Brandon rug. Then paint your current chest a deep red, add new handles, maybe brass, and a round mirror.

I love the board and batten idea! I've read so many tutorials thinking we could diy here and in our mudroom but I think I need to wait until our youngest is in school since I'm never alone, ever :) I'm saving that pic though I love love love the picture ledge.

I'm also planning to do something with the railing maybe stain it darker. Also I don't like how the runner came out - it was a rush decision to make the stairs safer and quieter when we first moved in and I've never liked it but am stuck with it for now.

Sammy yes there is an outlet! Such a good idea to paint the cover. I need to pick the paint color!

Oh and mic50 I love the color. We'd have to paint all the way up the stairs to the second floor so I'm torn on what would match up and down! I'm not a gray person at all though I love sage and blue greens.
