There is a lot of fine detail on that piece and every coat of paint fills in the crevices that make the detail stand out, obscuring them little by little. It's already a light color; what is to be gained by painting it a light color again?

Does it just need a careful cleaning?

I don't know what it is nor how old or where it's from, but if it has value, tread very carefully.

It is an Antique console from an Italian Castle

It seems to be a beautiful and unique piece. It's a shame that you do not have room for it in the main living area of your new place, is there any chance it fits against a wall in the bedroom? Temporary use for now, until you are living in a different place? And I think the advice from tatts is sound, think twice before painting.
