Are you in a climate where you'll really use a fireplace? I've decided I don't ever want another one because it isn't necessary, it impedes furniture placement, birds, rodents etc are always looking for a way in, and it's something else to clean. If you'll use it they could both be good. If you have asthma or any kind of breathing difficulty, do not get wood burning. If you have natural gas that would be my choice. If you have to use propane, I'd pass on that. I'm just on a little tangent because I'm sick of looking at homes in the desert or on the beach with fireplaces that will never be use. Designers need to get over that.

Why would the wood burning have to go to the basement? Can't beat the smell of wood.

Definitely gas, to protect the children! Here's a project I did!

Forever Home? I began that way w/wood fireplace building my house. Chimney, etc.

Stuff happens: prepare for eventualities. do you want to be alone in your 70s hauling wood? With a gas fireplace you have control with a remote and still the ambiance of a fire: safe, easy & vents directly out the wall. Light a pine scented candle and enjoy the convenience. Each system would cost about $2500.

Wood burning, it's worth the mess. Also, I enjoy chatting with the guy who delivers my wood each fall. It makes me feel as if I'm helping to support small businesses.
