two living rooms split by staircase

My husband and I just bought a new house. Because of how it was built the staircase can not be moved. Basically once you open the door (front entrance) about 4 feet in front of you are the stairs that lead to the upstairs. On the left side you have one living area (12 1/2 ft x 22 ft) where my couches, coffee table and TV will be. Along the left side there is a open wall where a large kitchen is. The right side is 13 1/2 ft x 22 ft) where i will have the dining room plus a whole extra space that i don't know what to do with. Not sure if I am giving off the right idea. I hope someone can help with this.

i do not have any pictures yet, i can not enter the house because they are staining floors and painting walls. but here is my attempt at drawing a layout.

It is most likely that the empty room was originally designated as the dining room and the room you are now using for the dining room (near the kitchen) was to be the tv room.

We live so differently now, and there are no rules as to what goes where.

A library with bookshelves, two lounge chairs and ottomans, a table/desk, etc would make a complimentary space near the living room. Painting the walls the same color for both rooms and installing the same window treatments will tie it all together.

OMG we just bought a duplex like this with stair in the middle, we have two bay window on both sides, two staircases in the middle, two doors in front of both stair, so what did you end up doing with your room??

We have a very similar house! I am not sure how much renovation you'd want to do, but we made the entire left side an enormous kitchen (eat in w/ 6 seat dining table!) and the right side a full size den. It is open and gorgeous!
