Dear mary Long this is difficult to answer without knowing the material and finish; it sounds as if you might have a lacquered cabinet. In any case, nothing is out of the question with a quality contractor. Your best bet is to return to the original cabinet manufacturer if that is an option and ask about the possibilities of refinishing the cabinets or at least get as much information about the original finish and production as they can provide. And or otherwise get at least three independent contractors to look at the cabinets, either painting company, cabinet company or both, and ask for options and quotes to refinish your cabinets.
