From TV room to Bedroom

I need help and advice. We live in a two bedroom home which is fine. . . except when DD, SIL and their two girls come. (which is two or three times a year). The girls are getting big enough that they can't use a pack and play and putting cots, etc. in their parents room (which is what we've been doing) makes it a bit crowded. I do have the "sunroom" which is a room off our bedroom.

It's 10 feet by 14 feet and has windows across the front and the two windows you see. Currently, we use it as an "extra" tv room. The "extra" is when I have a ladies club meeting, etc., it's a place DH can go to watch TV while the company is here. It's not like after dinner we come up here and sit until bedtime. We don't and often go weeks without turning on the TV that is in that room.

I have the two leather chairs in there as well as a bookcase and the Asian cabinet.

I am thinking about turning it into a bedroom for the grands. Obviously, the chairs would all come out (the one with the matching ottoman would go downstairs to be used as our comfy TV chair) and the other leather chair would be sold. The Asian cabinet would also have to go as well.

My idea:

Chairs gone, on the wall where the Asian chest is (which I would also take out of there) I would put a full size Jenny Lind bed somewhat like this

Put a Bates bedspread on it and a hand embroidered quilt on the bottom. The bookcase would either stay in that room (in the corner) OR I would trade out a chest in the hall for the bookcase. We'd leave a TV in that room and instead of sitting in a chair, DH would have to lay on the bed (but he'd rather lay than sit anyway -- he lays on the sofa when we watch TV -- I'm the one in the chair)

The other option would be to keep the room as is, get cots for the girls and put them up in the sunroom -- moving the furniture out of the way.

I need opinions and advice as to whether I should change the sunroom to a bedroom or leave as is.

I appreciate any and all comments -- thanks!

Martha

Is there room for a murphy bed between the windows? Seems you are giving up a lot for a few visits a year.

I agree with maggie.Or something that would not look like a bedroom most of the time. Pull out sofa? A trundle bed that looks more like a sofa?

Last resort, your cot idea. I personally love your sitting room the way it is. Sometimes even if we don't use something, you can still get enjoyment just by the way it looks, just passing through or glancing over.

eld6161 -- that's why I asked. Sometimes I think we make things difficult -- by trying to redo what we have. I looked at Murphy beds for that space -- they were like LOTS of money so I nixed that idea.

Air beds are pretty comfy and convenient for guests.

I would get two good quality air beds (regular bed height as opposed to on the floor) which are more easily stored than cots or I would get single sleeper chairs as Carol suggested. I would not convert the room to a bedroom for a few visits a year.

I sometimes have to use my main level sunroom as guest overflow space and we use a double high queen air mattress for the few times we need it. I find it comfy enough for me so two twins for your grands pulled out as needed should be sufficient for young people... Would you put the parents in your room with the kids or do the kids need to come and go thru your space?

I wonder how long the girls will want to share a bed? They are little now, but at some point you might have to figure out a 2nd bed and go through this all over again. It's such a nice space, as is, I think I'd go for the air bed option for now.

Watch Craigslist for Murphy beds...I see them once in a while. You may still run up against the bed sharing problem in the future, though.

I think good quality air beds would be just fine. I have a single and a queen we use when we have a full house. My 2 nieces who are in their 20's sleep together on the queen with no problems.

Air mattresses. Their needs and pattern of visits will undoubtedly change in the years to come, so I wouldn't completely rearrange my house. I slept on an Eddie Bauer queen high rise air mattress (I supplied) occasionally (6x/yr?) at my son's for 2 years. When I moved last year, he slept on it one night (pay back?) at my former house. No complaints from me during the 2 years, and he was wise enough not to complain last year. I plan to use it again as a temporary bed for myself when I move next month into my next home.

ETA - I wouldn't want to sleep on a queen air mattress with another adult.

Air mattresses and leave room as is. They're not visiting that often and when girls are older and have activities, it will be less often.

DD (20s) has no problems sharing a bed with a friend. I'd get a Queen pull out sofa.

I like the idea of adding a day bed with a pop-up trundle to the room beside your bedroom. I think you could do that and keep the room mostly as is. The nice thing about using a day bed/trundle combination is that it can be used as a single, two singles or a double when combined.

I have a day bed in my guest bedroom that has a pop up trundle, fine for two. We use it as the TV room the rest of the year when we don't have guests.

Fun2BHere -- there is NO ROOM for a daybed with the existing furniture -- the room is only 10 x 14 -- it would be a simple fix if I could add one and be done. If I did a add a daybed, I would need to get rid of at least one of the leather chairs and perhaps both of them. So instead of a daybed, I thought I'd just put in a bed and get rid of both leather chairs.

But I do appreciate your comments and it has given me food for thought.

Have you thought about a futon in place of the chairs? I had one in a mission style frame in my former home, a bungalow. It was a quality piece of furniture and made a very comfy sofa. It folded down easily into a double bed--the futon itself was of excellent quality and more comfortable then my bed mattress. No complaints from my guests.

You didn't say how old the kids are, but I'd say use air mattresses for now. You might decide later to get a queen sleeper sofa or the sleeper chairs, but for now if the kids are small the air mattresses should work fine for a weekend stay. Our grandkids always loved the 'camping out' feeling they had with sleeping on the air mattresses we would put down in the study. Plus they could watch tv or dvds in the morning when they woke up.

Have you ever seen the sleep ottomans? I found them on line by Castro Convertible. (Remember that company?) I am thinking of putting two the smaller ones in my office room. If I am having adult guest I wouldn't want them to sleep on an air mattress. I have a bad back and air mattress' are a killer for me, but for kids they love an air mattress, its like camping.

I use air mattresses for overflow guests and they are sooooo much more comfortable than sofa beds, chair beds or cots. Also, kids really like them.

Martha, my aunt had a few of these for overflow guests. Arizona, pool ;0)

They really weren't at all uncomfortable, I spent a week on one during one visit and rested well. I wasn't a kid either, I was approx. 40, married.

Sorry, Martha, I guess that's the downfall of trying to arrange rooms from only seeing the pictures. I thought you might have room on the right-hand wall as I was looking at the photo by removing the straight chair in the foreground.

Yes, I understand Fun2BHere it was just a picture -- and I didn't show all 4 sides of the room which perhaps I should have. The problem with daybeds is that they are a twin size mattress but then you add lots of inches all around them so they're actually quite large (or at least the ones I've seen). When we bought the house, the PO had a daybed in that room and believe me it took up the whole room which is why I opted for chairs. But I do appreciate all the comments and it helps me make my decision for others see what you don't see.

I would hate to give up such an adorable space off my bedroom. If you don't have room for an air bed with the furniture pushed aside, i would consider replacing the chairs with sleepers from American Leather. I've been told they are quite comfortable :)

Everyone -- thank you for all of your input. You confirmed what my "gut" told me and that is to keep the sunroom the way it is because it really is part of the bedroom (no separate entrance) and better serves a purpose as a sitting room rather than a bedroom within a bedroom! LOL! I had not thought about airbeds -- was thinking about folding cots which led me to thinking that a real bed might be better so . . . I think you all are right -- keep it as a TV room (even though it only gets used occasionally, with the bookshelves and TV it looks more like a "study, tv room" than a bedroom. And I don't have to buy a new piece of furniture (and what if I bought all of that and thought it looked awful?) and get rid of some if not all of the furniture in there. You all are great -- looking at things with a different perspective is always good. And they visit one to three times a year (although when they're a bit older they may be able to spend a week with us sans parents -- which means that there will be a real bed for them then in the guest room).

Again -- thank you -- you made something I was seeing fuzzily into a clear picture!
