Flooring dilemma

I have a very traditional honey colored oak hardwood floor in my great room. I want to add hardwood to three bedrooms that are in no way attached to the great room. I found a beautiful light whitish gray oak that I love. Can I use it where I want, or stick to matching it with the great room?

While you could use it, it will look like it landed from Mars in the wrong house. Houses shouldn't be a collection of different theme parks under one roof. They should have continuity, and flow. The 5 minute gray wood fad is already going away. The warm medium wood look has been around for centuries.

While you can, it will look awkward to have different kinds of wood floor in the same house.

Sure....but in a few years you will be rather upset that you didn't have the great room finished in the same floor. If you LOVE the new oak, you might as well put it where you will enjoy it = great room.

The "ideal" amount of flooring = 1 type throughout. That is today's trend that looks to be pushing the interior design concept for the next decade or so. That's why there are so many new types of floor that can go "anywhere" in the home.

So...the FURTHER away from the "ideal" that you get, the lower the value of your home in the eyes of the world. If you already have 3 different floors going on (let's pretend you have tile/stone through kitchen/bath/entrance, hardwood in great room and carpets in the bedrooms) then adding in another one isn't going to help your situation (or removing one and adding in another to keep the number higher than "1 type").

The only exception to the "1 floor rule" comes with "kitchens and baths". They are allowed to have their own flooring. The rest should be "1 type" of flooring. But once the kitchens/baths have their own flooring, the rest really should be "1 type".

So...you are welcome to do what you want with your home. If this is your forever home (you have NO PLANS to move/sell for the next 10-15 years), then go ahead and do what you want. By the time you need to put your home on the market, you need to update the interior anyway = fashionable flooring throughout.

If you worry about resale value (some people do...other's don't) then you need to be FULLY aware of what you are doing to your home. Good luck.

it's your house. do what you like. I hate the idea of decorating a house because,

    A. it's not in style or will go out of style shortly,,,

    B. it will hurt resale. so decorate your house in a way that will appeal to buyers, disregarding the fact that you, the owner, has to live there and look at it everyday!

life is short. decorate your house the way you like. so what if the oak living room doesn't 'match' the unattached bedrooms. seriously?? I have different floors in my house and don't give a rats butt if I broke some cardinal rule. I like it.
