You have white walls, white furniture, white blinds, white coffee table. I would paint the walls a light green or blue and paint the coffee table a dark green or blue before I tackled that entertainment piece.

I like the unit color as-is or any color but white because you already have so much white in the room including the white/light wall behind the unit.

I prefer it in the darker finish because as others have said, everything else in the room is light and there would be no balance to the room. Instead, you might look into modifying the doors by having the center panels removed and replaced with reeded glass to lighten up the heavy feel on the bottom.

Maybe paint the entertainment unit the Vintage Vogue. BM Vintage Vogue was literally my first thought when I saw it- before I read any comments.

The idea for the Vintage Vogue on the coffee table could be nice. This is not exactly Vintage Vogue but is the general color way.

Definitely an improvement over the white coffee table, and a lot easier than painting the large entertainment unit.

I’d want some texture in the room and would be tempted by something lower profile like this unless you really needed all the closed storage

Consider same color as the walls but leave the backboard as is. Change up the knobs to whimsical color to coordinate with the new coffee table color.

Thank you all for all your feedback. From the suggestions I have decided to leave most of the unit in the black and either paint the bead board at the back or change the back to a flat mdf board and wallpaper it. I like the suggestions to paint my coffee table so would like to find a bold wallpaper with some deep greens in it. Keeping all else the same! Thanks again.

Sounds like a very nice idea and plan.

For the entertainment unit: Instead of painting the back or replacing the back, you can just use foam core board for this. You can cover the foam board with wallpaper or fabric, and push it up against back of the shelves. It’s easy; plus, if/when you want a different look, it’s easy to change.

You could use grass cloth on the drawer fronts to break up the look of solid black.

For decor items, I would try to avoid rectangular items. You have a lot of that already. I'd put another 2 plants in top of the cabinet, and replace the rectangular decor items with items with texture and rounded shapes.
