To Rug or Not To Rug?

I just moved an area rug out of my living room because it was too big (8' x 10') for the space. Yes, I know the coffee table is too big as well BUT it's awesome, it's the first thing I bought when I purchased my place and I really like it. So it's not going anywhere.

Here's what I'm working with:
- Coffee table is 24"x48"
- There's 43" between coffee table and TV
- There's 80" from the wall to the chaise

Trying to decide if I should get a new, smaller area rug. 4'x6' would fit perfectly but I'm having a hard time with the color and style. Also have thought about getting a cowhide rug - if I can get past the guilt of owning one. One thing I don't want is a shag rug. I eat almost all my meals here so whatever go here needs to be easy to clean. Or maybe I just leave it as is without a rug?

Not sure if you need a rug, but here are a couple that would add pattern and contrast to the taupe sofa and floor. If you don't get a rug, then get some pillows in colors from your wonderful art works. That would add a lot as would maybe an interesting tray or bowl in one of those colors on your coffee table.

No rug, brighter pillows, perhaps a bright pink or blue box / boxes under the TV table to hold your books (it will also make cleaning easier).

I think you need a rug to define the floor & sectional. First one is just neutral, 2nd one is what I would like but may not be your taste.

Very cozy. Maybe just like one of those faux animal print cowhide small rugs? What's the old rug look like?

Hello Patrick,

We don't think you need a rug in this area. It would look a big crowded.

However, if you choose to put a rug here, a plain and light one would be better !

A neutral rug would be good for this space. Maybe a sand theme? A neutral bokhara?

I do agree with previous comments though, you don't necessarily need one. I think what the space is missing is texture. A rug could certainly fill that void but so could a throw pillow or blanket. Faux fur maybe?
