Yes, not having baseboards can be quite beautiful.

The function of a baseboard is to protect the wall from scuffs, dents from vacuum cleaning, moving furniture etc.

Most homes are sheathed on the inside with gypsum board which is can be easily dented. Its surface is a paper cardboard which gets painted or covered with some other finish. If the finish is not hard, then the paper layer can be torn and then the soft gyp interior broken and perhaps powdered.

So there are several ways around not having baseboards. One is to detail the baseboards so they inset and are flush with the gypsum wall surface. This can be done but is usually time consuming and thus labor intensive. Another is to use a hard wall material in place of (eg. cement plaster) or else in front of (eg tile or stone) the gyp board.

And yet another is simply to ignore the baseboard protective issues and have your builder take the gyp board to the floor finish and keep your fingers crossed! In some areas, you might be able to predict very little scuffling. And in other areas, damage could expected.
