Should I keep this damaged bar cabinet?

last modified: 9 years ago

I finally received my anthropologie bar cabinet and it has quite a bit of damage to it. I did get it on sale, so I saved 40-50% off the price already. I paid 1278 including tax and shipping. They are offering me 50% which means my price with shipping and tax is around 700. There are cracks, dents to the sides of the cabinet, marks on the top (look like burn marks?), one leg is 1/2" shorter than the other three, doors hang unevenly, small nicks to paint.

Any thoughts? I do really love the color. Would it be crazy to keep it with this amt. of damage? Do the misaligned doors bother anyone or does anyone know if it can be repaired?

It looks like cheap junk and will bring down the look of the room you put it in- send it back for a full refund including shipping.

Absolutely not. I wouldn't accept it looking like that if it were $200.

I guess it depends for how much you'd keep it. If they offered it to you for, say, 200.00, you could have it repaired/painted by an expert.

But given that you paid $1278.00 for it, I would tell them to come and pick it up unless they offer you a very significant discount, not 50%.

Also, for that price, you are not supposed to have to deal with any hassle. I'd also contest the charge with my credit card company (assuming here that you paid with CC).

Nope. The price is way way too high for damaged goods. Way too high. Return it.

They should pay you to keep it, as they'll never be able to sell it to anyone else and they will have to pay huge shipping costs to get it back.

For that much money, you could find a cabinet you love for a lot less money and have it painted that color.

I don't know about the dents, but repairing the paint is not impossible. I would be more concerned about the legs being different heights. You might need to cut down one to three legs to make them all the same height. You might be able to get it repaired at an auto repair shop (judging by the finish and since it is metal), but that could easily cost you more than $500. You might want to send photos to a repair shop for an estimate.

My first reaction was to tell you to send it back, but since they do not have another cabinet in that color, it might be worth it to you to have it repaired. If you get a repair estimate, you could send that estimate to the store.

They MIGHT tell you to keep it and refund your money after the CEO and VP receive your letter (with pictures). They can't resell it and it's going to cost them even more to pay for return shipping. That's happened to me twice lately. The first was a lamp that arrived damaged and then an exterior door handle ensemble that arrived in the wrong color. Of course neither was anywhere near the cost of your cabinet! It's really pretty but I wouldn't keep it (if nothing else just based on principle). It might take some time but you'll find something else you like just as much or more :)

Rockybird, that really isn't a very good response from Anthropologie, and I wouldn't be happy with that much wrong with the piece whether I loved the color or not.

In comparison, my neighbor ordered an espresso bath vanity with Carrera top from Pottery Barn that arrived with a crack in the marble. Upon receiving photos, Pottery Barn said, so sorry, please keep it and we'll send a replacement right now.

Her handy-with-his-hands husband was going to replace the broken vanity top and repurpose the first piece for one of their teens who was about to leave the nest - a sideboard, or dresser with the under sink space reworked then. It could even have gone into the garage as a landing space with some drawers for garden hand tools, but no one expected it be shipped back or asked for that process.

I'm sorry, I wouldn't pay more than $50 for it. I admit that the style is not something I care for, but it looks like junk and I would be insulted by the the damage. I seem to be the only person here who isn't overly bothered by the doors, so that just goes to show how we view things differently. The damage is unacceptable, unless I found it at a yard sale.

Nope. That goes back. Or in the garage at no cost to you. Is the leg really short or is the frame bent? Poor thing looks like it's been dropped.

No. That should be given to you for free based on the damage.

I had a $200 cabinet I ordered from Homegoods last year come w/ a tiny broken off chipped piece of paint on the front and they refunded my money in full and let me keep the cabinet.

Anthropologie should be ashamed of themselves.

Thanks everyone. I was quite shocked at the damage, but I loved the color so much I think I was overlooking it. Plus I have been so busy lately and concerned about my addition, that I dont think I realized how bad the damage really is.

You are all quite right - it needs to go back. I emailed the customer service and said that they should be ashamed for sending a piece in this condition to a customer. It is obvious that much of the damage is poor workmanship. I also advised them to investigate their quality control as clearly this piece had none. I also told them that they can have their shippers contact me, but they will have to work around my busy schedule.

    Oooh, rockybird...mic drop!

If you get ANY hint that they are going to be difficult to work with or it's taking too long for them to do what they said they'd do, contact your cc company immediately to dispute the charges. Let them take care of it!

In this situation I too would have expected them to apologize and ask that you keep it with full refund or offer to send new out, if it exists. What can they do with it? They can't fix it or resell it so it is a waste of their time and money to bother with a return. You are settled on what to do but in the end the question I would have asked myself if this were a craig's list purchase--would you have ever paid $700 for it? $200? I am going to guess no. That is the answer. No.

    last modified: 9 years ago

I agree - I would no way no how keep it for that kind of money. But if they should happen to reconsider and offer you a much deeper discount, I'm beetting that the doors can easily be realigned -- are they mounted with those hidden european style hinges? The kind that look like this:

If so, these hinges are designed to easily adjust to align doors, etc. It's as simple as turning a screw or two -- google for "european hinge adjustment instructions" or something similar. If you can't find it, I'll post a photo of the instructions I have (they're from Ikea). If you have that style of hinge, you should be able to line those doors up perfectly in just a minute or two.

Sadly, the rest of the damage is not so easily fixed. Which is why I'd push them for a MUCH deeper discount. Go up the chain if you have to. Good luck!

I am going to send the CEO a letter! There response is that they will not refund until they receive the cabinet back! Not even an apology for the state of the item or the inconvenience!

    last modified: 9 years ago

I'm so glad you "got real" with them, and I hope the response is satisfactory.

I have to qualify what I said ... I said I wouldn't even pay $200 for it. I should've said that I wouldn't want it even if it were free. It's junk now, and that's a real shame, but as others have stated your home is much too beautiful for damaged goods.

ETA: Just saw your latest. No way! That is absolutely inexcusable. Definitely send the CEO a letter. Heck, direct them here. Share it on Twitter. Notify your credit card company. They want it back??? Tell them to come and get it.

Unbelievable response. Did you send them photos? They expect you to repackage this now-acknowledged-by-all piece of $*** and haul it to the UPS store?

I once ordered a beautiful etched mirror from Anthropologie, can't remember the price but it was not cheap. I arrived cracked. Not a small crack, but a big one right across an entire corner. Very obvious. I called, they told me to send it back; but it was heavy and I complained a little about that. Finally they told me to just keep it and they would send me another one. Fine to me, EXCEPT - the new one arrived cracked as well and in the same place. I got my money back and wasn't required to return the second one either.

So, I would contact them and tell them about your cabinet. Take photos. I did and was going to send them but the person at Anthro. said no need. I'm wondering if this mirror had shipping issues to other customers in the past. Too bad they won't have the same color cabinet to send you tho because that is what you had your heart set on. I would not pay for the cabinet, even at the lesser price.

ETA: Oh, I also just read your post about doing pretty much what I would have done. ha

yes, they usually don't fight about damaged merchandise(i had a bad experience with shipment only once, it was dishes, and they obviously were damaged in transit..it was crazy time around Christmas. they didn't ask me to return anything even this it's much easier with dishes; didn't ask me of any photos; just refunded me right away when I called and complained). you must have stumbled upon really, really bad rep. Go over his head.

Was there too much time that passed between you getting the cabinet-and letting them know it's problematic? They accept returns for a year I think, and should accept indefinitely if merchandise arrived damaged.

The doors are wonky from the same "dropped on one corner" accident that damaged the paint.

That means the box is out of square ... and to fix it it needs to be reglued and clamped to bring it back into square.

But then the paint is still chipped and repairing a finish like that is hard.

I'd get a metal storage cabinet and have it powder coated the exact shade you want.

Thanks everyone! To clear up some of the questions:

    - They are paying for it to be picked up and boxed (from what I understand).

    - I called them within 15 MINUTES of receiving it. I sent an email within an HOUR of receiving it with pics.

    - The cabinet took almost SIX weeks to arrive. I called a few times asking where it was, and was told it was on its way. Last week I called, demanding to know where it was. We were able to figure out that the shippers had the wrong phone no. by one digit. I was told it was corrected and they would call on Monday, 02/13/16, to arrange delivery. They just showed up at my door on Monday! They did not call. I had taken the day off and so luckily was at home.

Meeting the shippers is actually difficult for me, as I work. I absolutely will not inconvenience myself or colleagues and leave during the middle of the day to go home to wait for the shippers to arrive. I have family visiting one of the two upkeeping weekends and I will not inconvenience them either by rushing home to meet the shippers. They will have to pick it up on my schedule. It would be a different story if I received the item in good condition and I decided I didnt want it.

Glad you are sending it back- that is a lot of very noticeable damage plus offer from them was way too high.

Last year I bought my daughter a mirrored night table from Pottery Barn. It arrived with several small dents along the wooden front edge so noticeable. The wood finish was a dull metallic silver/gold so afraid it would be hard to repair and match. Sent picture to customer service to make exchange- was sent new table and told to keep original table cost-free as they were sorry to have caused a delay and inconvenience.

Did you pay by credit card? If yes, I'd dispute it ASAP.

Send an email to the CEO, telling him the whole saga, polite, short and sweet, with attached photos.

And tell them WHEN they can come to box and pick up the item.

When I have issues with private label goods, I contact merchandising managers. I had an issue with Hayneedle product quality and sent photos to the Merchandising VP. They contacted their vendor and ultimately removed the item from stock until the vendor could improve quality, which they never did.

She thanked me for following up and I was pleased to see they took action to protect their reputation. They sent me outdoor furniture twice and picked it up twice. I would not have used it if they didn't come get it.

Yours really does look like a shipper issue. When you look at the box, does the information indicate it shipped direct from the manufacturer or through the Anthropology wearhouse? What was the condition of the box? Chances are it shipped in directly from it's Far East country of origin and was not inspected by Anthro prior to shipping to you.

Thanks everyone! I did send the CEO a letter. Not hopeful that I will hear back, but at least I have tried to inform them that their products are shipped in terrible condition.

@1929 - I am not convinced it is a shipper issue. The item looked like it was well packed in a wood box. It was on a pallet. I did not see the condition of the wood, but it was solid wood from the brief glance I got of it. I am not sure how it could be damaged like this, unless maybe it was tied down and suffered significant torque?

Get on Twitter and Facebook! This is my advice for dealing with all these kinds of issues and I have really found it to work. Post your picture and a comment, and Tweet to them about the problem and the RUDE reply.

Hi beagles! I dont think they are being necessarily rude, just unapologetic by email. The woman I spoke to over the phone when I received it was very nice, but there was only so much she could do from her end.

A lot of people swear by posting on the companies Facebook page about it if that is an option.

The absence of the apology and the insistence on not refunding you until you rearrange your schedule to send the item back is rude, IMO. It's not an insignificant amount of money, you should not have to be out that cash for however long it takes them to resolve the problem.

They have inconvenienced you by sending a damaged cabinet, by putting you in a position to deal with return shipping, and now by requiring that you wait possibly weeks for your money to be returned... And they apologized for none of this and are making you wait for a refund. Rude.

    rockybird thanked beaglesdoitbetter

When you put it that way, beagles, I think you are right!

I paid 1278 including tax and shipping.

Initially I was annoyed (on your behalf) for being out $200 (the settle amount initially bandied about) for the time it takes for the piece to be picked up and delivered and a credit issued. But then I remembered you paid over a grand for the headache.

I agree completely with Beagles. Not apologizing and bending over backwards to resolve this is totally rude.

I think I would also tell the credit card company that you have returned the item and they should take it off your bill. DO NOT wait for a refund! Deal directly with the credit card company. And I would inform the store that you have done that

    last modified: 9 years ago

I'm really shocked at their response. I'd definitely post the photos on their Facebook page, Twitter and Yelp if you have an account, explaining that the item arrived damaged and detailing their inadequate response. That should get their attention. I did this with a moving company that damaged a bunch of stuff and wouldn't take responsibility. As soon as I took to social media, my phone was ringing and they were ready to address it.

Good news! I emailed the CEO as suggested. I received an apology today. They will refund the full amt. I will not have to return the cabinet if I do not want to, which is easiest for me. It is hard for me to be home to meet shippers, as I work a lot of hours. They also said this is not the norm for their company.

Well, hooray! I hope the agent you were "working" with will be retrained.

Rockybird, I'm so glad they finally stepped up and handled this appropriately. However, that last comment - is that supposed to make you feel grateful somehow? You shouldn't have had to spend your time making repeated contact with the company. When I hear stories such as this of companies that hesitate to instantly do the right thing, I do make a mental note that would cause me to think twice about buying from them. Thank you for sharing your experience here.

Thanks everyone! They do not make them in mint anymore so I cannot ask for a replacement. I am not a fan of the other colors.

I dont think it is worth getting repaired. I dont know how I would load it up to take it to a restorer. It is heavy. I am not sure what to do with it. Maybe just put it in a back guest bedroom or closet where the uneven doors and legs wont be such a big deal.

    last modified: 9 years ago

What is it made of? Wood or metal? Did I miss that? If it is wood, I'm sure a local cabinet company could repair the paint.

The door thing is probably really easy to fix. I myself assembled a tall tower cabinet last year and somehow my mastery of assembly led to the door being off kind of like yours is. My FIL somehow jiggered around with the hinges and it was fixed w/in like 5 minutes. You would probably not need a restorer to do that, but rather someone with any degree of competency regading hinge adjustment (like a handyman).

Finally something that makes sense! No way can they sell it to someone else so why would they bother getting it back!
