More unknown trees.

Ok guys I walked the yard this morning and took pictures of all the unknown trees in my yard. I have been trying to figure out what they are all morning but it is really hard without any leaves on them at the moment. Any thoughts?

ps6fsu, it might be easier if you did just a couple of trees per thread - 7 involves a lot of scrolling up and down to respond to. You can just copy and paste photos from this thread into a new one. Also, could you take some close-up photos of the smaller branches and add them. Bud shape, size, color and arrangement can help with ID.

Your home's previous owner has some lovely choices for plant material!

1 & 4 might be Stewartia and 2 might be crape myrtle.

Seeing the buds would be very helpful too.

ok, ill get some new pics.

To be perfectly honest, ID'ing deciduous trees in winter is a guess at best. You need very clear photos that illustrate twig and bud detail as well as full shots of the tree, its branch structure and bark. It is far easier to wait until the trees leaf out.

please add your location to you name.. or else include it in every post ...

the splotchy bark reminds me of sycamore ...

i also encourage no more than 3 per post ..

The second one might be Lagerstroemia. But you really should start over with twig views included that show bud detail.

Thanks guys. I went out to take some better pics but i dont see many buds that would help. Maybe I would be better off waiting a month or two.

I'm almost sure 1 and 4 are Stewartias, and if so, WOW, you really hit the pre-existing tree lottery. Congratulations!

So here is what i was able to get closer up on #1 and #4. Not sure if it is enough but figured it couldn't hurt. I kinda remember seeing red berries on #4 in the fall. Birds were having a feast.

Yep, Kousa dogwoods. Still nice trees though. I think of Kousa bark as being shaggier and darker but it should have occurred to me, they are more common, after all.

Looked up Kousa Dogwood and seems right. Also dug up a photo from summer that had a part of the tree in the picture. Zoomed in a lot but i think it confirms. So you all think #4 is also the same as this?

Yes in photo 4 upper left, there's a classic dogwood flower bud. The flowers blooming at the same time as the leaves are out happens in Kousas but not Cornus florida, the native flowering dogwood with similar 'flowers'. The mottled color of the bark is common in Kousas.

The ones w/the mottled bark (1 & 4) are Kousa dogwoods.

After researching im almost certain tree #3 is a Chinese Elm.

ps6, that's a pretty good eye & looking more closely, agree #3 is prb'ly Chinese elm.

Im less sure about this one but I think #6 is some type of magnolia? Found a lone survivor!

Tree #7 - Got some updated pics to maybe help. Is it possible this is some type of Hawthorn?

Hawthorn does not have opposite buds but I have no idea what kind of tree it is

#6 Chionanthus virginicus? #7 Chionanthus retusus?

6 has opposite foliage hence can't be Redbud, Logan. Chionanthus would fit.

ps6, some of these will have to wait for leaves to ID. Suggest you post later when they appear.

Ok, I just noticed that one little leaf.

Didnt want to start a new thread for same tree. I got all the trees figured out (with your help) except 6 and 7. If I had to guess 6 (first 2 pics) is some type of magnolia and 7 (second 2 pics) is a flowering dogwood. thoughts?
