Seeing the whole living room with the bookshelves and art I would consider bringing in a red or orange red for an accent color to help coordinate the two sides of the room and to bring in some of the great colors that you have in the art in the bookshelves elsewhere in the room. Or a yellow.

@DesignHome, yes. I have never painted on a canvas before though. If I can find a readymade large canvas art that will work in that space, then I will opt for that instead.

@Ted, maybe I should focus on just the artwork first. I have always wanted a wallpaper and the one karielen posted looks nice but then which walls should it cover ? All of the non dark grey walls on both sides ?

If I do Canvas in the dining area, should I use non-canvas art above the sofa ? All the ones below are 60 inch wide and about 30-40 inch tall.

Some more artwork. Getting more confused as I look around.

I think the combination of a canvas and 3D art would be great. Think outside the box and be creative. Here are some examples.

Hi, Leena, I would say first think about what color scheme you are going for--I see the peacock blue/turquoise color in your glass candlesticks, but I see more orange/warm tones in the items on your bookshelf. If you want to work with both, find a piece of art that brings the two together, without negating the silver/gray tones you have throughout. Maybe some pillows that incorporate these colors also, as well as drapery/curtains, and/or area rug.

Leena, Art is very personal and if you are questioning what you are seeing, it isn't for you. When you see "it" you'll know and won't even need our approval. It may take awhile but wouldn't your prefer to have a piece that brings you joy than a piece that was chosen to fill the wall.

The last 2 photos Beverly has posted I believe that the 1st one is ceramic shaped bowls (may be a custom installation?) and the bottom one is baskets. If you search 3D wall art that may lead you to something.

With your bookcases across from couch I agree with those suggesting a large print/picture/canvas above the couch. But I wouldn't go too crazy with detail in the print ... this way it will keep the room balanced and not busy. I would also consider a small, 5-7 picture/sayings/canvas grouping on the same wall in the dining room.

While it can seem stressful to have a number of blank walls and nothing on them, I encourage you to go slowly and not worry about filling the space too quickly. When it comes to artwork, the issue is not, and really should never be, whether or not it matches your decor. What matters is that the artwork speaks to you, because you're going to see it multiple times every day.

I know you mentioned an abstract, but given that you have space for multiple pieces, I suggest that you leave a niche open for one, or more, representational pieces -- works of landscapes, seascapes, figures, florals, or more that spark an emotion inside of you when you see them.

Your home will be so much more interesting and personal, if you find artwork you really LOVE, as opposed to something that just "matches".

You can also do a canvas in one area and framed prints in another.

Thanks all for your input. Should the top of the two artworks in the dining space and living space be at the same level ? For the 60x48 canvas in the dining, at what height should it be placed on the wall ? One of the art I'm considerating for the living, the size is 60x40. But seems like its top might be higher than the one in the dining since it needs to clear the sofa. Will that look odd ?

I couldn't find the ones Beverly posted. The empty walls are driving
me crazy. I could use some generic abstract art for now and replace it
with something nicer later on if I'm not in love with it.

Hi, Leena. The height of art is something I'm a stickler about. Don't worry about where the top of the art falls. If the piece is the appropriate size and aspect ratio for the space, then follow Grover's rules:

For over the sofa, hang it 5 - 8" above the back of the sofa. This rule applies pretty much any time you hang art over furniture.

In the dining room, hang the art so its center is at eye level. REMEMBER, eye level is lower when you're sitting down. Now, sometimes this puts the art a little low so you can fudge this eye level rule in the dining a bit. But for a large piece, don't be afraid to hang it so the bottom is below the backs of the chairs.

Leena, I noticed multiple patterns in your living room. In order to bring out the best in your art selection, what are your thoughts of putting the rug in the dining room? I think the contrast with the white chairs would be add a nice texture and contrast.

@alohamariemarie, the rug was bought for the dining room initially. But I temporarily put it in the living room and it never made its way to the dining after that :-).

Perhaps it could be made more personable by turning pet or people photos into canvas portrait paintings. Example

Saw the chandelier painting for this room that had in the dining room posting. It might work well in here.
