Completely agree with the rug size, as stated above. The only other thing I would change is the drapes. Lengthen the rod, and add drapery panels to each end in a heavier fabric. You can keep the sheers in the middle if you need them for privacy. A black/white patterned fabric would bring the dark color of your dining table and bookcases to the other end of the room. I don't mind the fireplace as it is.

Thank you everyone! Sounds like the beautiful rug I just got is too small. Maybe that makes the rest of the space feel cramped. I'll move it to my husband's office. I'm thinking the ikea Stockholm rug might be a great fit here. I've attached pictures. Do you all think the fireplace tile looks super dated and long term should be fixed? I also like the idea of changing the mirror to black and round. I'll look into that. I might be able to add some trim to the curtains to make them pop more as well. Thank you so much everyone!!

Beverly's ideas are great! Keep your door and fireplace surround as is. Don't paint it black and don't paint the door black either The door fits the character of the house with the warm wood floors and stained glass windows. You can add modern elements in the meantime and change out the fireplace tile later on.

Down the road, think about getting built-in bookcases/shelves to bring out even more warmth on your fireplace wall. You could replace the mantel and flank the fireplace with shelves that could replace your bookcase. Even though the fireplace isn't functional, remove the screen and add another natural element with big chunky logs in the fireplace. Put a modern basket of logs in the corner where the plant is.

What about adding a wide black grosgrain ribbon to the existing curtain panels? That might have a similar effect and be cheaper/easier. I'll try to find panels like I already have though in a darker color. Thank you everyone!!!!

Your right no circular rug...it should've been a large oval but in the picture to me the chairs seemed pretty close that's why I suggested a round rug

I like the warmth of the color palette -- the room has a sense of invitation in it to sit, relax, and be oneself. As far as our home environment goes, you can't get better than that.

If you want to pull away from the oranges and yellows, I would suggest incorporating blues, notably in some artwork on the walls. You have one larger wall which could handle a bigger work or a couple smaller, and there's space for a smaller work or two on the other walls.

As you're on a budget, art prints look like the way to go. I've attached By Moonlight, Shore Leave, and Shades of Turquoise as different elements of blue. Take your time and find something you love, because whatever artwork you choose, you'll be looking at it every day, multiple times each day. Look for something that makes you feel happy and encouraged.

You could try a bigger rug under the chairs with blue, and maybe some colorful window treatments to compliment it. Here is one design project of ours with colors that might look perfect.
