Should I build shelves on wall?

As you can see, the wall looks pretty empty now, I have tried to put up some paintings on each side, but doesn't look really good.... should I build shelves on both side instead of using paintings or wall art? So hard to design this last , I really need your advice.. thx a lot.

Does the TV have to be over the fireplace? I'd rather a built in or a console off to one side.

My first thought was TV needs to be moved. Whatever is over FP should be proportionate, that means no larger than the size of the fire box. Nothing is going to look good with the set up you have now. Also the TV is too high for comfortable viewing. I think shelves would overwhelm the FP as it isn't very deep. I would look for a TV/media console that is 25% wider than the TV and about 28-30" tall and 14-15" deep.

I would put a low console table on each side of the fireplace put the TV on one angled for viewing at the right height and a piece of art above the other or some shelves above the other if you have things worth displaying
