Living Room/Hallway Help with Design

Hi Everyone,

Here is un update about my living room. Couple things changed, we have updated wall colours and changed our sofa. Now, I have a dilemma about accent pieces. I am not sure which rug will go along with my curtains. I saw one Ikea rug, that we really like, but I am worried if the ornament on curtains and rug will betook much for one living room. What do you think?

Hi, I agree that the rug & curtains together would be to much for the room. If you really want to keep your curtains I would look for a rug with a more simple pattern & more in the same color family as the curtains. If you really want the carpet, you could just change out the curtains. Some ideas.

I see a lot of neutral colors. Maybe think about an octagonal or square rug with a vibrant color. Yellow or light peach? Possibly same or similar pattern? 2 cents

    That's great!

if you look closely it really is very important that the walls are white and match the white background of the rug...gives it a crisp strong contrast! Would you consider painting your walls white! It will make a hugh difference....also I would have your small chair recovered in a black or white leather....or a navy blue to add a fun contemporary look.

Interesting point, Julie, but we repainted our living room just this summer and I would love to keep it.

Would it make a difference if I add coffee table, something like on the pictures below?

If you can't change up the wall color than add pillows with bright white trim or white background in the pattern...add a white throw or white faux fur over the sofa....maybe a white end table...I would not do white coffee table on the white rug...add a coffee table that gives some contrast or go with glass.....I love the mid century modern style of the coffee tables but would keep the entire table wood no white top.

Why not try a neutral rug since you have pattern in the window treatments already? Consider the rug on the bottom of this design project we did.

I'm afraid I'd have to say "no" to chevron or trellis designs. They have turned out to be not so timeless as one might have hoped. If you change rugs every 2-3 years you might not tire of those patterns before you're ready to switch. If the rug is a 5-year+ investment, go with something more classic and subtle.

No to the IKEA rug. There are better choices out there.

Thank you, decoenthusiaste. One of the reason's why we are thinking to go with Ikea rug is price point and we are not planning on keeping it for longer than 3 years. It is definitely not a 5+ years investment.

Thank you everyone for your comments, I might try a neutral rug as well and see which one works better. I will definitely let you know !

Thank you Beverly, it is a nice rug. What about accent pillows, which colour would you add ?

    Hi Everyone!

Here is my updated room, I've decided to go with a neutral rug. What do you think?

Looks great all you need now is this coffee table.

Thank you, oskuee . I think I saw similar table in EQ3.

It's called Noguchi coffee table , replicas are good enough.

The new rug looks great! Now just pull your couch out from your wall and float it. Put a narrow console table behind the couch where you can also put tall buffet lamps, stack books and pictures. This will bring your "conversation area" together a little more. Ya done good! :)

Thank you, guys for your comments. Next stop- coffee table. coopermcboo, I like your idea with a console table, but I think my living room is too small. Do you think it might look crowded with the furniture, if I add a console and coffee table?

Hi logankl, In answer to your question -- no, I don't think a console table will eat up too much space at all. You can find narrow ones so that they're 12"- 15" deep. (Since my house is only 12' wide, I pay attention to every inch :) Plus, they're so darn versatile that if another space in your house opens up, you can always repurpose it. And if you want to do the Noguchi inspired coffee table, I think that will fit in nicely.
