Need a Chandelier?

We are looking for a Chandelier for our dining room. This room connects to kitchen, family room and living room areas. (open concept) That is what makes it hard to find something for. I have chosen two out of the three fixtures we will need for this great room area. One is a ceiling fan which is installed and the other is a tri-spot for highlighting artwork. The third is the CHANDELIER for the dining area.

We wanted to keep the fixtures and hardware in our house modern. Our style is a mix of modern and antiques with a world-traveler living room that we are working on. It is fairly eclectic if you ask me.

I will post below the area I am talking about. Then I will post the fixtures we have installed already...then some I am thinking on. Please any ideas? Budget is no more than 300$ (aprox) for the chandelier.

I like #1 or #3. I think the straight line from ceiling doesn't call attention to the fan. On the 2nd one, my eye went to the wires and fan, and not the chandelier, which is also very pretty.

The first image is one we already have in the space . if you look above in the first image it is to the left in our kitchen nook area. Will be used to spot onto photographs. THe fan you can see placed in our family room in the first image above. (also in the last image above as well. )

THen: I have posted a few ideas I have had. Please post me some more if you find any you think would be good in this space. I've been debating on this chandelier for 6mo. Now. Time to go for it.

NOTE: i am still working on that wall of photographs back there and also on the look of the over all space but i feel this light could make a huge difference.

Hi cintronheese,
I photoshop the 2 chandeliers I like from your selection above. Also, one criteria for choosing a chandelier is the size. I believe there are 2 ways to know what size you need: size of the room or size of the table. Because your room is so opened, I would go with the size of your table. I believe the rule is half of the width of your table. It seems that your table is 48" wide so a chandelier with a 24" diameter would be perfect (Houzzers, please correct me if I am wrong).

Also, the chandelier should hang 30" above the table (for 8 ft ceiling). Each foot that the ceiling is higher, raise it 3".

suzanne_m, Wow this is good to know about the size. I had no idea that was the case. Okay. So I guess i will measure the table. It is a pretty standard older claw foot table. Also, by your numbers for height off the table, my ceilings are 9ft high....so 33" off the table. Is that right?
Thanks for the photoshop view too. I have been doing this with furniture. I enjoy being able to see it in the space before making a decision. Both are lovely hanging there. :)

Keeping in mind that you will see the ceiling fan from the family room as you look through (all i did was remove the white around the chandeliers on these following photos. I mean....does that even matter? I just don't want to clash with an already very modern fixture and also want to follow that kinda world traveler idea. I sure love that cage looking chandelier. I will have to go and measure the table and keep all those measurements in mind with the final decision for sure.

Suzanne, you are correct. For choosing an appropriate size chandelier for above a table, take the table length and divide that number in half. This should be the diameter of your chandelier, give or take a few inches.

Hi ocintronheese, I wish I could have been able to remove the white around the chandelier. I tried with photoshop using the lasso or the magic wand and it was too difficult unless I was going pixel by pixel to remove the white. If you have a faster way to do it, can you let me know? Yes, the bird cage was my favorite too :)

Chandelier #3 in bronze looks good but I still prefer the bird cage especially if you like the world travel idea. Plus the chandelier #3 comes only 12 in. wide which would be too small.

I think either of the "cage" look chandeliers would look great with your eclectic style. I love sparkle, but it doesn't really work with your well traveled feel you want. The bottom left of your choices is great!

ocintronheese, the chandelier you choose is only 27 in. high. Can you check with we_got_lites if you can have the "chain" longer? Also, this chandelier is 22 in wide, have you measured your table? If it is 48 in. wide then I think it could work but if your table is bigger then I am pretty sure that will not work. Hope, I am not bringing disappointment :(

Oops, sorry, I just realized that the chandelier above comes with a 72 in. chain. Just curious, have you checked the diameter of the bird cage and the length of its chain?

Yes, all of the Solaris Collection fixtures include 72" of chain for height adjustment.

Certainly measure the diameter of your table, and go with the fixture that is closest to 1/2 the size of the table.

IMO, it is a little bit too narrow but I believe it could work specially that this one is fuller than some others. I am not an expert but maybe we got lites can confirm or invalidate.

The birdcage light would work, its just 2" short from its recommended diameter size for the table, which would be around 21".
