Drywall it over ( the spaces, hard to tell from the picture)? Remodeling stairwells is very expensive , at least where I live.

I would drywall the upper wall and cap the 1/2 wall that has the stair rail on it with wood painted the same color as the trim. You can use it to display a few pretty objects.

Folks always want to change stairs, but when they get the number to do so, they quickly change their minds instead. This happens so often, I don't even run stair leads anymore and I could use the work.

That looks a little dangerous to me as it is (the open ledge filled with flooring gives it a "drop of death" look to me...). The type of flooring you have planned for the reno will be part of this conversation. How much of the hardwood do you have? Are you keeping it? What are your flooring plans?

Stairs have A LOT to do with flooring. Floors are both a finish AND a decor item on stairs. That means you can change the entire look of a stair just be adding new flooring.

So....what are your renovation plans and what are the flooring options going on here?

Can you add a ledge to the left side and put a piece of plywood over it, then add a tall plant - like a palm(if it gets sufficient sun). You'd paint the plywood the same color as the wall.

Is that a mirrored niche? Can't tell or is this an optical illusion? If it is a niche I would fill it in as it doesn't serve a purpose. It looks like there is a drop down "void" between two stairways. I would fill the void with a good quality piece of wood and paint it to match your trim. Look for a handsome sculpture and place it on the new wood platform.

We are getting hardwood flooring in the entire house minus bedrooms and bathrooms but including stairs. That's a part of the remodeling we are getting. (Because the area between the stairs is important for weighbaring of several floors etc). I would love pictures of ideas. The firm that is doing the job said they can basically do whatever id like with it problem is I have no ideas

I agree with the comment above with adding a curve to the square corner, it will make the space a bit more elegant. But there is a lot of options out there, I like the idea of idea extra lighting for your stairs since it is a dark area. It just depends on how much of your budget you have devoted to updating this space.
