Kitchen decor, again: which rug?

Surprisingly little has happened since I last posted for decorating advice back in October. I loved to thoughtful help I received here and am slowly moving forward. Here is original post: http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/4234678/suggestions-for-a-chandelier-and-table

Since then, I purchased one of the chandeliers, as well as a mirror. I was hoping to have the chandelier installed before posting my next question, but I just can't wait anymore!

My next step is to warm up the space with a rug. Below are photos of the room, the chandelier, and the mirror. Also, 3 rugs that I like.

  1. My favorite is the Skyline Rug. Does it work under the dining table or does it clash with the fireplace? If not under the table, does it work in the actual kitchen between stove/sink/fridge? Maybe it's generally too busy, or too casual for either space.

  2. Is a plain sisal rug a better choice design-wise? I also like this look.

  3. I also like a bolder, brighter Kilim rug, called theRosario. Not as much as the Skyline but maybe the colors are better?

  4. Open to other rug suggestions! Not married to this kilim style. Rug can go under dining table OR over in the kitchen!

Thank you!

PS: Because some of you wondered before -- the color of the brick fireplace is not changeable at this point. Neither is the new chandelier. But the mirror can still be returned. I would love to replace the table and chairs, but that's in the future.

    Thank you!

Update to add that I also like this Marina indoor/outdoor rug

... and to ask - Will a pattered rug like the Skyline Rug conflict with my granite?

    No.

Love the Skyline rug and your newly installed chandelier. I do think a different shape and size mirror will better suit your space though. Beautiful.

Thank you Christy! I have reservations about the mirror too. It's smallish and will mostly reflect the kitchen of a busy family. I'm at a loss about what to put up on that blank wall.

I forgot to say how great your new fixture is, the granite is gorgeous and it's a lovely home.

Is your table round or oval?...I just can't tell. Does it have a leaf in it? If so, do you need it that large for every day? If not, you could make it smaller and perhaps fit a small cabinet or console against the wall?

In any case, I'd try rotating your chairs so the back of the one chair doesn't block the fireplace. It will create a nice opening behind the table for whatever you do on the wall.

How big is the mirror? You might be able to add sconces next to it to make a larger arrangement. Or you could do something fun like hang 3 of them together, if they are affordable.

How will the wool Skyline rug hold up to traffic and spills in your kitchen?

The table is oval. It is fixed in size, no leaf. There's no room for a console against the wall. The table can be rotated, but then someone is basically sitting in the fireplace.

I do need 2 more chairs for the table. (There are 5 of us and 4 chairs, so my poor 9 year old sits in a Stokke little kid chair, not pictured.) New chairs won't match the current chairs, which are no longer available. I am open to getting 6 new chairs if the price is right but I want to save every penny for that Skyline rug!

Instead of 2 new dining chairs, I could use a bench. It would be placed in front of the fireplace to open up that line of sight. I was thinking of placing a bench under the widow, though.

The mirror measures 28" wide by 33" high. The wall is 9' wide by 8.5' tall. That's the part of the wall that I consider useable - not the part that's over by the hearth. If that makes sense. Is there a way to paste a mock-up of the mirror onto a photo of the wall, with the right proportions?

Here is a photo the shows the table and wall in question.

(remember this is the old fixture)

Full disclosure. The bar console below is also in the room. The kitchen table is to the left of it, if you stand where this photo was taken. It does NOT fit against the wall by the table. It's my grandmothers, please don't ask me to refinish or get rid of it!

Here are two more pics. My budget is so tight, as is my time. I just can't search for that "forever" piece of perfect art now. I would like something there though, while I wait.

How about a grid of botanicals on the wall adjacent to the fireplace? Maybe ferns or birds? I would map it out for size - maybe 3 rows of 3 or 3 rows of 4? You can use calendar prints inexpensively.

Those pics help. I'm suggesting moving just the chairs, not the table. It would appear they would then straddle the feet of the table, but when seated and the chairs are pulled out, it's not a problem. I think it would balance the room better. That's a sweet little console; so great to have something of your grandmas.

Do you know the maker/name of your chairs? We might be able to help you find some on ebay or elsewhere.

The chairs are Lotus chairs from Pier 1 (I got them on craigslist). Delilah 66 asked about the practicality of wool rug in the kitchen. The rug is $500. When I started looking I was checking out the $99 rugs on wayfair but I graduated up to that one. Anyway it is a really good question. It's been in the back of my mind too.

Here is the mirror, marked out with tape. Next is my attempt to mock it up with a proportional photo.

    Too small?

I like the chairs like this Olychick. If we were 4 I'd keep them this way.

The new chandelier will be centered on the table and art :)

And I found another rug contender. They're priced the same and either can be placed under table or over in kitchen. Sorry for all the posts! Eager to finish this up - I'll take a break now. Thanks for reading.

I'm partial to the Skyline for your kitchen and maybe a less busy one under your table. I've had a wool rug in the kitchen for years. Easy to spot clean, tho really, vacuuming it was pretty effective with an occasional dry cleaning. With that kind of weave, not much is absorbed easily .

The mirror looks okay, a bit small, but like I suggested above, maybe a couple of candle sconces on the sides? Maybe not these, but an idea...

Where you've hung it looks just right, I think.

I really like the DR furniture in that space, especially with the 4 chairs straddling the table legs! I would be tempted to get a 5th black chair of similar size/shape. Place it to the left of the console or the right of the FP and pull it up to the table for meals.

The skyline rug for kitchen, one of your more plain suggestions for dining. Absolutely love the fireplace brick and your grandmother 's console.

I don't have a better suggestion but the idea of watching myself eat while dining would seriously bother me. We have a local brunch eatery filled with mirrors where it can be a struggle to find seating where I don't have to observe myself eating. (I'm fine with living room mirrors...) I'd hold out for one or two pieces of art.

Oh, I think Delilah has a great idea about extra chair(s). What about getting a set of 2 that are different enough that it looks deliberate and placing them on the wall, either side of the mirror (or art or whatever you do) and pull them up at meal time....you could look on CL for some or maybe something like this from Overstock... These are $172 for the pair but there are lots of choices. I know it's easy for us to suggest spending your $$. (I like the new placement of your chairs, too).

If you have a At Home store in your area go there! They have tons of really nice chairs, rugs, art and mirrors etc for very good prices. You can view the website for more information and see some of the options. Another good place for rugs is Tuesday Morning stores. Art options there too.

I adore your console table. I think it would be beautifully showcased on the long wall by your dining table. Have you considered placing your table on an angle? I think your mirror is lovely but perhaps a bit square. Should you opt to move the heirloom table to the long wall you could then hang your mirror by the staircase. I do like the arrangement of the chairs straddling though. Heck, it might be an easier solution to move the clock to the long wall and purchase a piece of artwork for the mantle. Just some suggestions. I would have to play with it to see what fits functionality and comfort. It is a very inviting space.

Thank you everyone for your help! Christy, I'd love to place the console along that wall, but it doesn't fit no matter how I rotate or angle the table. I'm definitely ordering the Skyline rug. I will post photos when it arrives. I'll be on the lookout for 2 chairs or a bench, too. Homegoods and Tuesday Morning are about an hour away from me. Close enough for a planned visit but too far to pop in often in search of that perfect affordable artwork and chairs. Which is both good and bad!

As for the mirror, I am going to take it back. I do love the sconce idea, but I have concerns still about what the mirror will reflect. So that blank wall is still fair game! Keep the suggestions coming! It's possible I will only get store credit for the mirror (at Pottery Barn) so I'll start there. Have a great weekend and thank you again!
