No telling. SM2 appears to be the most common ..... even in the area of Italy that my husband most frequents (Milano). We almost always grow a few SM2 every year. My husband tells me he originally purchased the seeds from a little shop in Gorgonzola. My database reflects they were from L'ortolano. There are many other regional varieties. I'd call Burpee and ask them. Thinking out loud, we've grown SM2, SM Gigante 3, SM Redorta, SM Nano, Super SM and Scatalone ..... there are lots more.

Agree and especially so when dealing with Burpee as they are notorious for incorrect labeling, name changing and strain substitutions. If you want guarantee buy from the other source.

I grew SM once years ago. It got a lot of BER, so did Roma.

In my opinion, both of them are cooking tomatoes and not much fro fresh slicing and salads.

Also San Marzano has a trade mark in Italy. Or that is what I have heard. It is a variety that is cultivated in a location called " San Marzano".

It is canned by various Italian companies. One is under "Cento" brand name.

Unless one is into canning it as whole, I don't personally see myself growing it as I can make best sauce , with herbs and spices, with just about any tomato.

I love to cook Italian! My wife and I go to a market that sells imported products from Italy. We buy the DOP San Marzano tomatoes so I can make "Sunday Gravy." I am not even close to Italian descent...but I pretend I am when I cook. I am Irish and I can't get excited over potatoes and mutton.

This year we are raising SM from Victory Seeds and SM2 from Baker Creek. Hopefully they work out and I can cook with my own SM tomatoes...

I do a lot of Italian dishes to especially when we have fresh tomatoes : Eggplant parmesan , Lasania , all kinds of pasta with tomato sauce. I am growing my own herbs (Oregano, Basil, Rosemary, Sage ... Nothing beats fresh from your own garden.
