i really keep meaning to try it, i know some people have reported success by finding nuts that are truly raw, with no processing, to buy bulk amounts as nuts rather than those sold as seeds.

for those sold as seeds i have tried some stuff from these people :

almond :

and yeah gotta brush up a bit on latin or have google at the ready to look up genus/species names. although they now have a common name dealio on the web page...

one concern i have about almond is the potential for getting a bitter almond? starting with a good almond you are more likely to get a good sweet almond, but i really dont know about the chance of getting a bitter almond. it seems like more of a gamble than other nuts/fruit trees, because of that.

also i think by law all almonds (at here in the US) have to be pasteurized? i think the pasteurization process would make them not viable. they do not require processing of other nuts like this.

i have seen a few people (ebay) selling interesting nuts from their own trees that do not process them at all, truly raw. if they are fresh enough, these might sprout. another thing i have wanted to experiment with...but havent yet. its certainly cheaper to buy them as bulk food, than to buy them as seed....but if they sat around too long, longer than a year, or got too dried out the germination could go way down and they may not be viable.
