I would say the answer is yes, an unfertilized flower structure will fall off eventually. Only because have never seen an empty seed pod. The seeds are quite large, about the size of a hazelnut (larger if only one or two) so you should notice when they are developing. The seeds usually germinate readily.

Some of the extra double type varieties are sterile.

Well, so far so good. A couple fell off that I'm sure I did NOT pollinate, and 3 I believe I did, are holding on!

OK, none of the ones holding one last year actually took, they fell off a month or so after that post. I had the plants in my garage where temps were < 50F at the most, throughout the winter.

Now I am trying with a plant I brought into my house, which I only keep at 67F. This time I am noticing the ovary seems to be elongating.

1) was it perhaps just too cold in my garage? Do camellias have a minimum temp for the pollen to germinate? I'm trying to put a japonica on a vernalis.

2) is the ovary seeming to elongate, something I'm not sure happened last year, a sign the crosses took? Cannot be sure whether or not I saw this last year, I feel like I would have noted it above.
