New house

I just bought a house. I'm usually gravitate towards more of a warm golden traditional colors. The walls are this great gray color with dark hardwood floors. I'm trying to break out of my design shell. I have some traditional dark wood African masks that I'd like to put on the wall to create a nice contrast. Any suggestions on couch, area rugs and accessory colors to create something new for me. I'm at a loss.

Don't buy new things just to go with a wall color that was not of your choosing. Those floor would look nice with a warm white or neutral beige color wall. Are you just trying to save money by not repainting?

Money really isn't the issue. I'd be buying new furniture anyway. I have all these great curtains and artwork but they still might work here. Just thinking about trying something different but then again why waste money?

Joy, it's very neutral so I bet everything will look beautiful. The wall color is perfect for making your artwork stand out. I wouldn't get large furniture and don't buy everything in one place. Have fun with it, if you don't love it don't buy it.

Also, is this a dining area and sitting room? Will a tv go in the space? buy a large area rug with color and go from there.

If you stay with the gray walls I'd suggest light rug and light upholstery. Is the ceiling gray also?

The ceiling is white. The kitchen is large enough for a dining area but I live alone and I've found I never use a dining room table for anything more than a desk. Lol. I'll probably put one of those kitchen islands in the middle space and use that.

I'll have a large flat screen in there so you're right no large furniture. I entertain a little but have never had huge crowds descending but this is my first home so that might change periodically.

I'm not always a fan of gray, but yours is pale and neutral. You could go many ways. Here are some photos of rooms which showcase African masks. Without going totally tribal, do think about some other elements that echo your masks, which obviously have meaning to you--baskets, pillows that suggest African colors and patterns, natural wood side tables, art that incorporates the mask colors, gray walls, dark floor. If you're up for a leather sofa, one in saddle/camel would be interesting.

Honestly I hate leather furniture and any animal fur/skin besides leather would have me breaking out. I like the grey mixed with the masks though. This is harder than I thought. The whole house is painted in this same wall color but God I'm tempted to paint it a warmer sand color.

Sorry about the leather sofa rec. I've been posting on Houzz too long, and so many people posting dilemmas have them--usually in the form of what's known as a manatee oversized leather sofa.

Yes, you'll have to decide whether to repaint. Why don't you do a Houzz photo search for "grays walls dark wood floors" and start an Ideabook of photos you like from that search? The photos will help you decide whether to paint or not.

Yeah. I'm just trying to break out of my comfort zone. I love warm colors and I'm thinking at the end of the day I might because I have to like it and live there

I am a huge fan of African art; in fact, my coffee table is a Senufo bed. That said, it would be helpful to see your other art pieces to help you design a space around the things you love. IMO, nothing is more pleasing than an eclectic space that has been carefully curated. It's inherently interesting and demonstrates the owner's personality right up front.

Why not paint the living dining the color you want? But not until you get furniture pieces. Then make decisions on other room colors as you go. Since this will be your main sitting area, you want to feel cozy. Get two chairs and an apartment sized sofa first. Then get a rug that works colorwise for your new furniture. In fact, BEFORE you paint, I would get the furniture. Paint is available in hundreds of colors so easy to find when you have main furniture pieces. Then rug, then paint color. Your masks will work on most any color because they are distinctive and meaningful.
