Root mealy bug egg cases? :o)

Hint...the roots are healthy!

My nicholsoniae has that! You can see it through the holes on the bottom of the pot. I gave it some Bayer.

I think the balls that i have, have bugs coming out of them. They might be some kind of eggs.lol

Ding ding! Winner! More specifically, the spores of arbuscular mycorrhizae.

I was terrified when I first saw it because, well...look at it, but took a specimen to work and put it under the microscope (with permission, on my lunch break). Definitely fungal spores of the good kind!

Are they sometimes a yellowish colour or is that something else?

They can definitely be yellowish in color. I have seen white, off-white (ivory?), pale yellow, and a shade darker than pale yellow.

To differentiate between mycorrhizae and, say, root mealies, you at least need a good magnifying glass. You will be able to see larval and mature stage pests (mealies, aphids, etc.), along with their egg cases, if you have an infestation. Under magnifying glass, mycorrhizae spores look like uniform little balls, without any sign of pests. You will also see fungal fibres, without any pests.

You will never see mealybug eggs without microscopic aid; they are too tiny. You can see the egg cases, though!

I have seen these little balls in white and pale yellow. Good to know they are ok!

I just purchased some soil at a garden center on Sunday that claims that it is inoculated with mycorrhizae. I'll have to keep my eyes open for the "root mealy bug egg case" looking things. :o)

What exactly do the spores do for the roots and how do they get there?
