Hi, and thanks for a great question! I had several reasons for angling the island:

1. The major circulation through the house passes right by the island, plus access to the stairs is right across from it, so I tapered the island at the north end to give a little more breathing room.

2. I left the south end wider to accommodate 2 bar stools, plus 3 to 4 on the long angled side. Many people really don't use their dining room and have daily meals at the island instead, this allows more people to gather.

3. Though 4 spaces comprise the great room it's actually just a big, rectangular box, and the angle gives a little variety to all the straight lines.
