St Augustine to replace Fescue

I live in Southern California. I used Marathon sod in the backyard when we moved in. Half of the lawn looks incredible...gets sun all day. The other half is patchy...gets some sun, but is shaded by a couple ficus trees. I have aerated, reseeded, fertilized, etc but it just doesn't come in thick, which I assume is because of the shade. I was thinking of planting St. Augustine plugs in the patchy half with the hopes that it will eventually take over the entire yard and replace the fescue. I have St Augustine in my front yard that looks amazing and holds up great to dog urine. We can't let the dog in the backyard because the urine kills the fescue. Would I be happy with St Augustine and my plans or should I continue to try and revive the fesuce? TIA!
