Really like all the natural light and that you have sheers. Your room has great potential. If you have a fixed panel with your patio door unit, consider adding a living plant (or maybe not with a toddler). Your drapes are hanging a bit oddly. If you keep these drapes, see if you can reset the hooks or get a different kind of hook so the tops of the drapes are more uniform. You have enough natural light to consider hooking the tops of the pairs of drapes together and investing in some tie backs for style. the fabric need not match the drapes -- just coordinate with your color of choice. The color of the drapes seems intended to coordinate with the wide tan armless seat. In the second pic, the corner looks cluttered. Unless those are toys needed in the room, see what in that pile you might move/store out of sight. Does your ottoman have storage -- that's always a plus, especially if the top is reversible with a solid firm side for using it as a coffee table as needed. Avoid adding clutter disguised as art. Art should represent your interest and be something you value and treasure -- not just something to fill the space on a wall or a place on a shelf. With a toddler, you really don't want to crowd the room with any more furniture than you need. Try moving what you have around a bit before investing in more pieces. Try centering the rug in the room away from all three walls and/or at least putting the sectional farther onto the rug -- the is to move the sectional a bit away from the windows. If you might have wanted a less neutral color but need to accept what you have for now, consider an alternative for adding color. You can get rolls of narrow trim tape (about three or four inches wide) intended for the top of wall paper that can be added horizontally to the top of the wall above your drapes and all around the top of the wall in this room. While some designs are just geometric prints or strips, others have images that might reflect an interest or hobby. One of my neighbors chose a hunting and woods theme while another chose a beach -- using the strips on painted walls rather than walls with wall paper.

I love the contemporary camp vibe that PCMom hit on for you . . that is sort of where I was headed with the red originally which wasn't for you . ... we are evolving to find your taste and how to marry all the rustic elements - contemporary rustic is a fun vibe. Color on the house is what will take it there - are your windows paintable or no? Charcoal or black would work with them and the cedar elements (shutters, crossbuck door) really beautifully if you select a warm tone (bm black bean soup for the stucco, maybe bm caviar upstairs) but that is a very brave step. Because you have so much stucco, you will want to stick with tones you find in natural stone. Personally, I think all the different window sizes help read out the cottage thing - and you may want to add some shutters on the back side eventually. I think it is neat that the builder could do some things for you, but before you jump - paint and a new garage door will give you much bigger visual impact and should be integrated into your project. The railing on the upper deck now doesn't work with the rustic contemporary thing - you will want to shift your details to be more consistent as you add to your site. Also, you will want to search houzz for pergola details - there are so many different styles of end cuts, braces or not and those details are what will make your pergola add to the look you want. Since you and builder are still in talking stages (and foundations have to wait for thaw), discover the details you want before you sign a contract and he buys materials. Hang in there - doesn't matter what your neighbor thinks, it is your home and you love it.

You are working with the gray in different tones as I can see in the area rug. What you need is to add contrasting colors like yellow, orange, purple, aqua, light blue since the sofa is a a dark gray it all depends what colors you have in the rest of the house especially in the area close to this room. Add an ottoman in front of the sofa and upholster it in a fabric that has the contrasting color or colors you decide to use, you need a floor lamp or if you have space next to the sofa a small side table with a table lamp and art work on the walls and your daughter will like more!

tqtq...yes, that is what I am thinking. As much as I love the look of that patterned black and white floor now, I wonder if I will tire of it after awhile (when I started this thread I was all set on it). If I found a shower curtain like that I would take it! Still love my teal walls so they stay (they do look better in person). I think I will probably go for a white tile - basketweave, hex or "picket fence", still can't decide! You all have been great, even if you did talk me out of my shower curtain, (truth hurts sometimes).
