Chicago Restaurants - Theater

I'm taking my 18-year-old DD to see Hamilton soon on a weeknight and could use dinner suggestions. It's been a few years since we've been in the city. We are staying in River North area and plan to arrive mid-morning to spend time exploring. The show begins at 7:30. The theater is located at Monroe and State Streets.

We'd like someplace with character and good food, not spicy and not a chain. DD loves salmon, salad and soup. Price $$-$$$.

We are both so excited! Any suggestions are appreciated!

Agree, Berghoffs is a classic Chicago, was there for lunch after recent Womens March, they handled the huge crowd exceptionally well with great food & service.

Also like Italian Village, which has 3 restaurants, like the "village" best.

Hope you enjoy Chicago! If you are flying into ORD, you can take the CTA "el" (as much of it is elevated) blue-line train downtown, a cheap way to see more neighborhoods than an expensive cab or shuttle ride on the expressway.

I like Berghoffs, for classic German/American and great old Chicago atmosphere. I was just in Chicago yesterday, staying at the Palmer House.

The best Salmon that I've had in Chicago's Loop lately has been at The Gage on Michigan Ave near Madison. It's about 3-4 blocks from your theater.

All food at The Gage is superb and it's got a lively, fun atmosphere.

i also like Vivere in the Italian Village but it's an Italian restaurant. The Berghoff isn't really a seafood place.

The Gage gets my vote.

If you are staying another day, DS (a huge Hamilton fan, his graduation gift was a trip to NYC to see it last spring) works at Chicago Shakespeare Theater and recommends the current show Love's Labors Lost (comedy). It's on Navy Pier so plenty of options for eating there, too.

We ate this weekend at Greek Islands restaurant in Greektown--amazing fresh seafood of all types. I had an incredible salmon dish.

I have been to Berghoffs a few times! I had fun with the beer flight IIRC, and took my mom there to honor her German heritage. :) Thank you for the reminder. I think it's the winner. DD likes the menu. I've booked it on Open Table. The Gage looks like a stop for another time. I've been to Greektown many years ago but I don't remember the name of the restaurant. Mitchell's looks like fun!

We will drive in and park thanks to SpotHero. Plan to Uber or Lyft to/from the theater. Edited to add that we are staying just the one night. Thank you all for the suggestions.

If you do go to Berghoffs make sure to get the yummy creamed spinach!
