6 year old giraffe loving daughter -please help me with her bedroom!

I am hoping to get some ideas for my 6 year old daughter's future bedroom.

She has unique taste, but currently shares a room with her 2 sisters who love pink. So I am really excited for her to have her own room she can fill with her personality.

Her requests:

-- She wants a red/white or blue/white stripe duvet. I have showed her many other options, but she loves stripes and keeps going back to these, so this is the direction we will go for bedding. Her sheets are solid white.

-- Her favorite colors are red, orange and yellow. She also likes blue and purple. No pink. ;-)

I was thinking of maybe doing the blue/white stripe duvet with red, orange and/or yellow accents and pillows, but I am not sure if that will look awful or not.

-- She adores giraffes! So giraffe art is a must.

So here is what I have so far. The blue/white or red/white stripe duvet and some giraffe prints that she likes. Will these prints work? I don't mind that they don't match the duvet perfectly.

Should I get one print, two or three?

Her favorite one is the air balloon giraffe, followed by the giraffe in the kitchen. Would those look ok in white frames side by side, or too busy? I generally like things in 3s, but I don't think the skating giraffe fits in as well with the others? Thoughts?

Duvet options:

Giraffe prints:

Which stripe duvet do you prefer with the giraffe prints?

Any ideas what to do for pillows?

Rug?

Other decor?

And the big one -- Wall color??

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, ideas and/or guidance.

If it helps, this is her bed (I don't think I want to paint it), and I will also attach the floor plan for her room. I don't know where the bed should go, and she has no other furniture yet. I would like to get a nightstand for her, and I am not sure what else, if anything. She won't have a dresser (using elfa system in closet instead). Windows are south facing.

I love those three giraffe prints together. Its like a day in the life of the giraffe, isn't it? (And I really like the skating one. The giraffe is skating in Central Park in NYC with Plaza Hotel and other iconic buildings in the background, for goodness sakes!)

So the prints could be your guide to color.

As for the bedding choice, I like the blue much better.

I did a search of Houzz photos for kids bedrooms for "giraffe." While many were nurseries, I think the colors schemes are appropriate.

The colorful pattern of this rug would work with the stripes and the print:

Love that bed! You can mix painted furniture like a night stand with it.

Looking at the floor plan, I would put it on the solid wall with the foot of the door facing the entry and the closet.

as much as she loves the giraffes now, she will probably change a few years from now. white is fine for now. you might also wish to think of when she grows up, what can she take with her, white modern furnishings are often good. let me see what goodies i have to help.

havingfun - fun pillows! you are right, I know the giraffe obsession will only be temporary. But childhood is fleeting, the prints are cheap and I can swap them out of the frames for something else later. The duvet and hopefully the rug might still work as she gets older (whatever I end up going with).

houssaon - thanks for your thoughts; I love your comment about the day in the life of a giraffe. Haha! I really like that rug you posted, and light blue walls are a good idea.

I also love those whimsical giraffe prints! Just make sure they are framed uniformly and simply and hung together. I also love the blue stripes. And the throw pillows are great. My daughter is 24 now- she hated pink when she was six and she still does!

I am not excited about the jewel tones of the giraffe art. How about something more natural giraffe color/stylized orangey giraffe? I think that would go well with the red and navy...kind of nautical patriotic giraffe!

Pool Habit- thank you for the links and your thoughts. I initially found some prints that were more natural, and found some beautiful giraffe photographs. But when I heard the joy and belly laugh out of my daughter when she saw the whimsical giraffe prints, I knew that was the direction we need to go.

er612- that is so awesome! Thank you!! I like the Mountain air color (nice light blue) -- I will show my daughter. And I love the rug, it is so fun! Do you know where I can find it?

Just from covering up each duvet with my hand to see how each look with the giraffe prints, I like the red one better. I also like all three prints. I'd bring in some yellow either on the walls or in pillows. I'd love to see the room when you're finished - it looks like it's going to be such a happy place.

which brings me to this pillow that I think would fit in perfectly

Thank you-- that pillow is perfect! She loves the yellow, too. I will be sure to follow up when the room is done, although it won't be finished until this summer.

You're welcome. The rug is from Land of Nod: http://www.landofnod.com/jellybean-rug/f13774

What are you planning for window treatments? Hear are both 5x8' and 8x10' rugs...

    Love this.

Love all three giraffe prints (I'm a giraffe girl too!) Love the blue striped bedding. Love that your daughter is confident enough to dislike pink (I dislike pink too!) Love the happy pillow.

And most of all I love your parenting philosophy.

PS I'd say leave the bed as-is and paint the walls white. Her room will be so energetic and happy, and easy to transform when the next stage comes.

@lindsey - Thank you; your comments totally made my day!

@er612 - Thanks for the rug info, and I really appreciate those layouts! It is so helpful for visualizing! I haven't even thought about window treatments yet. I might end up doing a simple white roman shade if the room can't take any more color. ;-)

that is what i was trying to say about the white. it would just save you having to paint again and her room is such a wonderful rainbow of colors. i matched the rug to the bed, because you need 3 things of a pattern or color to make it feel like it was part of the design.

The life sized giraffe is pretty cool!!

havingfun - I understand what you were saying about the white now, and it totally makes sense.

I just paged through your link to spoonflower -- oh my goodness! I don't know if I dare show my daughter all of those tomorrow, haha! My mother in law loves to sew and is quite good at it, so I might be able to give her a project or two. Thank you!

My favorite giraffe was the balloon one, but why not all three?! They all rock! And, yes, she might outgrow both giraffes and bright colors...but at 46 I still haven't so she might get 40 years out of it.

The pattern on these rugs reminded me of a giraffe so I had to share (both from Land of Nod). The paint swatches are just meant for the wall behind the bed. I would paint the other walls white/off-white.

Love the suggestions here. I vote for: White walls, blue and white stripe duvet, bright yellow happy pillow, and the three great giraffe prints your daughter loves. Don't paint the bed. Live with it for a while and see if the wood works, which I think it will.

Layout wise, while the bed centered with tables on either side is a balanced, pleasing look, it is too adult. Instead, put the bed in the location in the third and fourth layout pics, which are great as they leave lots of play space, which she is bound to enjoy in a room of her own.

I was a hippo kid and had three hippo pics in my room growing up, in a very similar style to your giraffe pics. I still have them in a keepsake box. Looking at them brings back great childhood memories of time spent in my room, my own little world. Glad your daughter has pics she can love just as much. While the other giraffe pillows and pics posted here are fun, they don't hold a candle to the personality of the artwork your daughter already loves.

Gosh er612, those are really cute, too! I didn't realize we would have so many great options.

Good point about the bed placement, Kendrah. While I like the look of the third layout, I am leaning towards something along the lines the 4th. I would like to keep the rug on the smaller side.

Thank you for sharing your warm memories about your hippos....I hope these do the same for my daughter! And who knows, based on a few comments, maybe she will enjoy having them in her room for longer than I am anticipating. :-)

I just realized I forgot to update! I ”finished” my daughter’s room last winter, and she LOVES it! The giraffe prints are perfect. I would have liked to go bigger with the prints, but we were limited by budget and physical space on the walls. Overall, I am happy with everything, but the room still feels a bit unfinished. I’d like to add another pillow or something? I have issues with things looking cluttered/busy, especially in bedrooms, so adding things can be a challenge for me.

I still don’t have a rug, as I couldn’t commit to anything. Everything I tried was too busy or too cramped (she doesn’t have a lot of available floor space). Does the room look unfinished without a rug? Should I do some window treatments? My husband is happy doing the wood blinds and calling it done, but I might be able to persuade him for more if the room would look better with curtains or valances. I’ve also considered flip flopping the giraffe prints and the knobs so the giraffe prints are over the bed. I tried it that way initiallly, and I can’t remember what I didn’t like about it, haha. The knobs were empty for a long time, but she has slowly collected “special necklaces” to hang on the knobs.

The colors didn‘t photograph that well this morning (we are in the middle of a blizzard, and with the blinds open it is throwing my camera settings off. The last two pics are probably the most accurate). Anyway, here are some pictures:

she (now 8 yrs old) loves using her desk for writing stories and drawing:

Forget to say you can make a vignette with the knobs interspersed between and under the two prints on that small wall.

I like the prints where they are since your daughter can see them when she is in bed. Maybe think of a way to DIY a large colorful print to place over the bed.

You can add a little bench or dresser on the wall space between the doors. A runner maybe on either side of the bed. or a little rug at the foot of the bed would add a feel of cozy/warmth

Great idea about the runners on either side of the bed. Make sure their slip resistant though. ;)
I totally agree with quite a few of the ideas in these last few posts. I also think the prints should be hung above the bed - and the way they are hung now, they are too high. Someone already gave some good input on specifics. I think the room really needs a colorful rug. Maybe a bookshelf could be added if you feel the room needs more furniture. As for that unique bed, I hope you don’t ever paint it. It’s wonderful!
