I know painting wood is a way to freshen up a space, but is there a way to make stained wood "work" when you have A LOT and painting seems to be a huge undertaking? Unfortunately the wood is not stained dark, but more of a walnut :(

I personally love walnut - it is the perfect wood with warm browns and I use it for a lot of the furniture I make for my clients. That said I am not a fan of stained wood trim but really do not have a solution as painting it would be a huge undertaking and costly. Perhaps the wood needs a fresh coat of stain to give it a new life. I would recommend contacting a local painter to review your options and what the costs may be. Sorry I could not be of more help.
