AGA Mercury or Elise

Does anyone have the AGA Mercury or Elise range? We like the look and features but wonder about usability and reliability. We would get the gas cooktop instead of induction, but any info on either would be welcome.

Anyone out there have an AGA Elise 48"??

Try mumsnet. A up moms site. Lots of aga talk.

But those are Falcons there, not Agas. They’ll have info on those too.

We did end up purchasing a 48" Aga Elise and have been using it for nearly a year. I love the look, we bought the matte black one with a gas top. Everything has been great so far. I haven't used the broiler tray yet, which is sad because it was a feature I really liked. I think I don't want to get it dirty. I'll get over that soon, I hope. The convection side oven preheats very quickly.

Do you have any specific questions I can help with? I was frustrated at not finding any reviews or information before we purchased so let me know if I can help.

We just got back from looking at that identical oven - we thought we wanted 6 burners, not sure what your configuration looks like, but this one has one large wok burner in the middle and 4 other burners. Are you able to slide your pots easily back and forth across the grates?

I don't think I'm too concerned about the smaller ovens- but how do you feel about the doors opening to the side vs pulling down? Did your retail store give you an idea about any issues they've ever had about maintenance or warranty/service? This is my other concern with buying a European version.

    Thanks!

We’ve got an AGA Mercury - haven’t had it long but so far so good. It’s more oven than we need but my husband thinks we’ll become foodies one day. I bake a fair bit and have been really happy with the results. (We had a Thermador range before and I HATED that oven.) I really like that I don’t have to heat up a massive oven when I’m making scones or something on the smaller side.

    Hi All ,
Me again, our remodel is complete and our range looks beautiful- I will post a picture later tonight after we tidy up from the weekend. My question is, we are having challenges simmering... even the small burner keeps things at a boil? And we certainly can’t simmer on the larger burners. Is anyone else having this problem? Am wondering if maybe we need to have our stove adjusted somehow.
    Thanks for your insight!

We have had the 48" mercury for 2 years. I love it! The induction works very quickly and the oven looks lovely. So pleased with it. Would never go back to gas. It's the only 48" induction that I could find. Perhaps more have entered the market since?

Rachel, It's great to have this review of the Mercury range. Would you consider starting a thread with just this short blurb? Lots of people come here asking about the Mercury.

I am looking at the 48” induction Elise or Mercury and am concerned about cooking a large turkey in the smaller ovens?

Anyone with the aga elise or mercury induction , can you straddle the burners with a griddle?

@Becky Lyttle, any photos or updates on your range? I ordered mine, sight unseen and renos are still ongoing. Looking probably at another month or 2 before completion.

Thanks for reminding me! We love the look, we did have to submit a warranty claim as it turns out our gas was adjusted incorrectly (hence why i couldn’t simmer!). Warranty service was great and the tech was helpful. We cook a lot. The center burner is super powerful and meant for very large pots and pans. We do have some challenges getting burners to light sometimes... enough so that I’m considering asking the tech to come back out. A year later I feel like I’m still learning the oven temperatures too- seems like they run hot, so to be safe I cook or bake most everything with a starting time 20% less than a recipe calls for and then adjust. But if I were to do it again, I’d still likely purchase the model. It’s not the beautiful performance of a Viking or similar in terms of burner precision and even flame distribution - but I’m OK with that, I’m not cooking for a Michelin star restaurant and I’ve yet to have a dinner guest complain. :)

Thanks Becky, for the update. Interesting about the ovens running hot. have you contacted them? I don't think I would be happy with that or it being shrugged off. Your kitchen looks beautiful. I'm loving the photos and all the clever details. Very unique and cozy and warm.

We are also looking to buy an Aga Elise 48" Range to replace our Thermador range which we do not like. One of the problems with the Thermador is the loud fan noise used "to cool the electronics" we were told. Is the Aga also noisy?

There are no electronics in the Aga. the only noise is the fans when using the convection oven on the right (or using the convection mode on the left oven). But I don't find it a loud noise or anything out of ordinary...

I agree! We have the mercury. It’s quiet. No bells and whistles

We’ve ordered the Aga Mercury 48” induction range and would prefer to not have a venting hood. Do you think we could get away without one?

One of the reasons I redid my kitchen was that I hated not having a proper range hood that vented to the outside. I hate cooking smells lingering and any smoke which could result. While that's personal, and I would never do a range without a hood, I don't know what would be code in your area.

I also have the induction. I have a bad habit of never turning on the hood fan. It’s basically a decoration for me despite being an avid cook. But, I like the look of the hood and I think I needed it to respect code. I’ve provided a photo, sorry it’s messy!

I wouldn’t do it without a hood. Even with a hood, I have accidentally set off my for alarms a handful of times (and we cook a lot). The small ovens let out a ton a air because of how they open, so I almost always turn my hood on anytime I’ll be checking in anything roasting in the oven. Plus, the hood is huge for keeping odors contained and not lingering. Bacon smells great in the moment but not something I want hanging around!

Rachel Ward, your kitchen looks fabulous.

I think we're going to order the mercury and install the BEST cattura downdraft. We need to put it in the island and we can't do an overhead hood.

Rachel, I wanted to know does the induction cook as good as a gas range I was set on the 48” wolf but cane across the induction range.

Sorozco22, I’m not Rachel but I installed the Aga Elise induction 48 this summer. I love it. It heats a cup of water to a roiling boil in 33 seconds. And that was without power boost. I was making something in my Thermomix and the first step required boiling 2 cups of water; it took 13 minutes . ( even using water from my instant hot ), It took under a minute to go from 130 to boiling on my induction. I had read that it was quick, but it really is astonishing when you see it in action.
It’s so easy to keep clean.
I had a Viking gas rangetop in a vacation house and I was reluctant to use it as I had to lift not only the heavy grate of the burner I used, but the surrounding grates as well.
It also melts butter gently as well as chocolate without using a double boiler.
If you do a search with my name you’ll see my review and comments.

Thank you so much this is so helpful!!

We are looking to buy the Mercury 48" induction in white, but I don't want any 'yellowing' or 'brown' discoloration from heat over time...does anyone know if this occurs?

    Thanks!!

We have the 48" Mercury, dual fuel and I love it, but I'm still trying to learn the tricks to working with the small ovens. Many recipes seem to need either less temp, less time or both. Convection seems to add even more to factor for. I will say that the range burners are probably more than I needed. I normally only use the single small burner, hubs uses one of the larger burners for meat, but I've only used the large burner once or twice for my canner. One note, if I had a crystal ball when planning my reno, I would not have fallen for the all appliances should be stainless steel trend, and I would have purchased this range in white enamel. This much stainless is a beast to clean.

Thank you, everyone, for all of your feedback and comments! It is all greatly appreciated!

We are considering purchasing the 36" Mercury induction, and have a few questions: Does the induction oven stay on, all the time, like the gas counterpart does? I've seen the question asked, but did not find the answer to: Does the white fade, yellow, or turn brown with time and use? Is there anything else that would help us make the decision? (Out current range is fading into the sunset quickly and we need to get something going quickly).

    Thank you!

I was really interested in the Mercury. Finally tracked down an Elise to look at today, and it is definitely beautiful (I was really excited about it) but the construction seems flimsy. Seems to be more for show. Just thought I would put this here for those thinking about it, it helped to see it in person.

@Pawsitively, sorry , hope this isn’t too late for you. No the induction doesn’t stay on all the time. I had the same question. In fact, a few seconds after you lift your pot off the hot plate, it will switch off.

@purplepolkadot I think I was also expecting a very heavy enamel piece like the original Aga so that may have initially skewed my thinking but the kitchen installer ( and had done many construction projects was very impressed with the quality. So far ( over a year) it’s very solid. )

I'm deciding between the 48" Elise or Mercury induction range. With this that have the Elise..does the bar above your knobs make it hard to see where to adjust the knobs? It seems like you'd have to bend down to see ew them.

You don’t have to bend, just tilt your head. I haven’t found it to be an issue at all. Plus it is SO pretty that I don’t mind the head tilts.

I’m considering the Aga 48” induction but am unclear hope many large pots can really be used on it. Would love photos of actual cooking and what fits well next to each other. Thanks!

I am not at my “vacation” home at the moment so I can’t do that for you. But I will say that as there are only 5 hot plates, pots can be spread out. I have also used a griddle spanning 2 plates and it worked very well, even for things cooked not directly over a hot plate. The middle one is big and the others are smaller.

We have the Aga Mercury 36" and there are 5 burners on the stove top. A pretty cool feature is to be able to "link" 2 burners together, to heat a griddle. I believe this can be done on either the left or right side, with the front and back burners.

One more note, while I'm here: this stove boils water faster than any other stove we've used, including gas ones.

We're thinking about a 48" Mercury and all the comments here are very helpful. I was reading another post about wall ovens blasting hot air (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/2284953/wall-ovens-and-blasting-of-hot-air-into-kitchen) and wonder how the AGA ranges fare on that front?

Our 36" induction range is very well insulated and we can barely feel any warmth in front of the unit, with the door closed. There is a vent in the back that allows a little bit of steam to escape, but it is barely noticeable and certainly not problematic.

Can any provide more info about how the right oven doors swing out on the Mercury and Elise? The space that we have for a range is a corner so there is cabinetry to the right, at a 90 degree angle (if that makes sense). I’m concerned whether the right oven doors need to swing out more than 90 degrees to be fully open. i hope that makes sense! Thanks!

This is the maximum swing of the door. So you should be fine.

Are the knobs and bar on the above pics in gold or silver? Thanks.

Considering the 48" mercury as well. The website says it's self cleaning but when I read the manual on cleaning it basically says use oven cleaner. Can anybody let me know if it is self-cleaning and if both ovens are or not. Thanks.

I don’t know if the newer ones may be self cleaning but mine that I got 3 or 4 years ago, well it’s self cleaning, only if my name is Self ….

The website listing on Appliance connection does say self cleaning. Elsewhere it says easy clean interior. I would call the Aga company /distributor and ask. It’s also about $4000 more than what I paid so maybe it has new features.

What is the difference between the Mercury and the Elise?

    Asthetics. Basically. The knobs.
The Elise has more of a French styling with 4 pointed knobs. Mercury has more of a contemporary look with round ( hifi looking) knobs.
    Functionality is the same.

  • last year

Does anyone know if on the Mercury, the round knobs can be switched for the Elise knobs? Or how to find out?
