Temporary fix color suggestions

I'm going to completely redesign this kitchen once we have lived there for a bit - new layout and appliances. In the short term, I am thinking of painting these cabinets and keeping the off white appliances. I'm thinking a peek and stick backsplash, painting, and new cabinet hardware. What color can I paint my cabinets that will work with these appliances. I was thinking a gray/beige or more off white?

How long is "for a bit"? Couple months or a year? If it's more than a couple months then I would paint the cabinets. I had similar flat panel cabinets in a rental and was able to paint them, which only took a few solid days and it was cost effective and made a huge difference.

I would:

paint the uppers to match the creme appliances
paint the lowers a deep navy
replace pulls
remove wallpaper, backsplash, track lights by sink
(love someone's idea of getting an island) get island in same wood/finish as wood paneling.
paint walls a few shades lighter than the *new* creme uppers (not painting the wood paneling, which I find charming)
paint/spray paint ceiling fan same color as *new* wall color

I think I'd leave it white on off white and install washable wallpaper in a pretty pattern for your backsplash. The hardware looks okay for the style of the kitchen.

I have to say, I don't see the value in doing any bandaid improvement here. The kitchen is clean and functional. No, it's not pretty, but that doesn't matter and it's actually a lot of work to paints cabs. A backsplash on top of the 4" splash you already have will look off, too. You can get a contractor pack of pulls for $20 or so, but they won't be an improvement so why bother?

Every bit of money and energy you don't put into this space now will get you that much closer to your ultimate goal.

I'd remove the border, paint the walls and the little bit of wood up above. What about painting the fridge black- (is there a way to do that?) I agree- save your time and money and get the kitchen done sooner!

Buy something on wheels to stand in for an island and paint the walls and/or wooden header (if it doesn't tie in with the rest of the house). I wouldn't waste money on much more than that if you intend to do the improvements in the next two - five years.

Thank you everyone- some great ideas to think about. The wall paper will definitely be removed and the wood and walls painted. I appreciate the advice!!

If you dont do anything to the space it will encourage you to save every penny to redo the space and get the wow factor you seek.
If you start spending money and pouring all your energy and resources into making it prettier it will only prolong the true remodel. Speaking from experience.

It looks like there is a pass through with a shelf on the left side of the refrigerator. I assume that's why the refrigerator has to stand in front of the cabinets? For the hardware, you could always spray paint them in order to save money. Maybe remove the undercounter paper towel holder and buy a pretty on-counter holder. You could also update the lighting above the sink - they make small stick-on LED lights.

Yes, i am harping to take the wall that the fridge is against our to make the kitchen more open to the living room.......I didn't mention this is (everyone's favorite) a split!

Yes, off with the wallpaper. If you're going to paint the cabinets, do the walls and uppers in the off-white that matches the appliances then a beautiful pale teal on the bottom, which goes well with the reddish soffit. Get new, bronzed or chrome hardware.
