What would you do with this fireplace wall

I need ideas for this large fireplace wall. The tv is being mounted to the right upper corner.

Thank you Vicki. It was a long day!! I think the Pashmina is the best color to do here for sure, since your dining room is open next to it. Let me look at other colors for the beams though. I would continue the same color as baseboard around the top with dental molding and window trim. Can you take a picture standing in the dining room opening looking into your den? So I can see the whole room? Are you going to purchase the tan sofa you posted above earlier? It's very pretty!!

Yes I am definitely purchasing the tan sofa, just deciding on what else to get to go with it. I was going to do 2 sofas but they are 44" wide, so that would leave me about 4 1/2 feet in between. That would also make the sofa come way passed the wall into the kitchen opening. We are planning on pulling the one by the window out 18" to avoid the air/heat vents in the floor. I will take that picture soon

Why not include those 2 'basic hues' in fabric at windows?

everdebz we just changed the floors on the whole first floor. The window trim is the same stained.color as the ceiling The grey dental molding and beams are the same color That is original, over 30 years old. I don't think the grey relates to anything except it picks up grey from the fireplace. The walls match the hallways but I think I am going to paint it the same color as the kitchen/dininng area that this room opens up to

"except from fireplace" - might be ok then since fp is so focal. Tan sofa coming? how nice those tones go together: just one room example:

You might be saying that the 2 [warmish and coolish grey] intersect at too many points? they can go [in person would be nice to see]

Are you talking Pashmina continued into LR? oh ok.

Vicki I've been looking for beams and I like BM gargoyle color #1546. There are a few more that look good but they are dark. It's also one of the coordinating colors BM recommends and it's been my personal experience they usually know best!!! They are the paint experts. You can vary from that a little but usually it's best.
The black fox color mentioned by belleburgmaggie looks nice too but if you wanted to change your room colors later I think the lighter one would be better to go with more colors. It matches your hearth good though.
    Is it slate?
If you do put up a mantle, I would do a stained one the color of the wood in your ceiling . Just a thought.

Here is a picture standing in the opening from the kitchen to the living room. All furniture is going.

I like gargoyle for the beams, will check it out. The ceiling planks pick up some yellow, and we had a different floor, so that is why the walls were painted Oat Straw. I also think Pashmina will look much better. So this is straight in my head... walls Pashmina, Trim around windows, and dental molding Navajo white to match baseboard molding.

Vicki before making a purchase for your sofa or other furniture, can you get some painters tape and put it on the floor in the dimensions of the furniture? I always do that to figure how my furniture will look in the room
Beforehand. If the pieces are too big for the room, you will never be happy with them no matter what!! It also helps when deciding what pieces to buy
  • 9 years ago

The hearth is limestone. I don't like dark colors so will def check out the gargoyle for the beams. It's a very cool interesting room with lots of little details.

Tammy we had painters tape on the floor for the sofa and we really like it by the window. Hubbie is a computer engineer and we have been playing around on the computer putting different furniture in a virtual room. I love the look of two chairs opposite the sofa, but haven't had any luck finding what I like. I might just go with a chair and a half that matches the sofa, with an ottoman, and be done with it. I inherited my daughter's cat and I have to be really careful with nubby furniture. She thinks it's her very own large cat scratching post. She stays away from microfiber so that limits my fabric choices greatly. Can you believe I have to pick my furniture out around a cat lol! I am not a fan of microfiber so I have to look for furniture where the microfiber doesn't look like microfiber.

NO TV ON THE FIREPLACE WALL!!!!! Your proposed location is far too high, and would seriously throw off the balance of the wall. Find another place or, better still, another room for the TV.

I NOW have two sofas flanking my fireplace. This is the best decision that I ever made. After living in this room for 30 years with three doorways, a large picture window and a fireplace, the room now looks perfect. We live in Michigan and most homeowners living in the Upper Peninsula would love to have your fireplace wall.

nmp19 Can you send me a picture of your room?

Thanks for all the ideas everdebz. I have a sofa upstairs in a den that looks like the sanded microfiber chair. People think it's leather before touching it. That's the microfiber look I like. Not the cheap looking kind. I am not sure I want to add brown in that room. Maybe the lighter colored one. I would def need an ottoman if I put chairs, or a reclining chair. I like to recline when I sit and read a book, or watch tv.

Should I delete all those you didn't do a "like"??

I have a sweet Scottish fold cat who is just 2, and never claws anything he is not supposed to. My daughter's cat on the other hand is a tazmanian devil and loves to get into trouble. She is moving in with her boyfriend who is highly allergic to cats. I don't have the heart to say no to her.

Vicki I found a few chairs that would look great in your den but I don't know if they're car friendly. The one with the red in the fabric would look great!!! A pair flanking the fireplace on each side facing the tv would look great!!!!
    Sorry cat friendly!!

They are really nice. Thank you, I will check them out :)

I hired a painter for next week and picked up the BM color Gargoyle for the beams. I painted a spot on the back side to test it out and to me it looks like a dark grey. I am not sure I want such dark beams above my head. Everything in this room tends to read much darker than it is. The Pashmna looks grey on the walls. The ceiling is stained a darker color. I am doing BM pashmina on the wall, The dental molding and baseboard molding will be painted BM navajo white. I am thinking I would rather have a lighter beem. I agree the grey is not the right tone. Maybe a greige color or taupe/grey

    Any suggestions...

It's hard to see where the beam has been painted in the picture. I'll look for something lighter

Vicki if you can get some samples of BM "grant beige". And Sherwin Williams "naturel". They are both very pretty with Pashmina also. They have a hint of gold in them and I think they would look nice with your stone as well

I will look at those colors. This is one coat of the gargoyle on the back side of the beam.

That is dark Vicki. It does need to be lighter.

Everything in this room appears darker. That is why I have a hard time with colors. I will get the other two paint samples and try them. I think I want something that blends in more with the ceiling.

The ones I mentioned above may work for that as well since they do have some gold in them.

So back to the paint store I went lol. Natural and Grant Beige are too light and I think have too much yellow. My husband think's I've lost my mind lol

Vicki what are the colors on the top of the picture? It's hard to see them in the photos

    last modified: 9 years ago

Beam on fireplace left to right

truffle interlude london fog. Grant beige

on beam away from fireplace himalayen rock, waynesboro taupe, plymouth rock. The three on the beam away from the fireplace are colors on the same swatch w gargoyle

I have to make a decision today. Out of all the colors I have narrowed it down to Waynesboro taupe and Plymouth rock. Plymouth Rock is very close to Pashmina, maybe too close. I am going to get a sample of the Waynesboro taupe and start there. Both colors picks up the taupe in the floor nicely.

Vicki can you get a sample

of iron gate as well? If you get the color too close to the Pashmina it may look like you tried to match it and missed. Iron gate is a little darker but not as dark as gargoyle. you need some contrast to make it distinguished as a beam.

honestly, the fireplace is gorgeous. but with those color floors..kinda gets washed in. maybe if you slate the bottom of it too. break up the area where the floor and fireplace meet.

I went back and forth to the paint store trying all different samples on the beams and everything made the beams look either too dark, it looked aweful with the Pashmina wall color. Or it clashed with the stained ceiling. In the end we decided to keep it simple and paint the crown and beams Navajo white which is what all the trim in the house is. We still have to finish painting the inside of the windows. We love it! It makes the room look so large and open. Your eyes immediately look up, We realized the grey beams brought everything down. We are still waiting for the new furniture that we ordered. We are going with a mix of greys, taupe and tans. We will eventually put one long curtain rod on the three windows. The tv will be mounted on the wall opsoite the fireplace so you will not see the tv when you walk into the room, and it will not take anything away from the fireplace. I will post more pictures when I get the furniture. Thank you everyone for all your help, it was really appreciated and very helpful!

Turned out great!! Your room is so nice & bug that you could have two separate sitting areas.

one for tv watching and one for zoning out by the fire!! Let us see what happens next!!

Thank you, it's getting there. We ended up with the painter from hell. He was recommended by a very close friend of ours. We fired him and we are doing the rest of the painting ourselves. I just ordered 2 high leg recliners and a sofa. I am painting some coffee tables that I think will add some nice charm to the room.

Oh no!! I'm sorry to hear that Vicki. You could do the tv area with the two recliners and the off in front of the fireplace. Just a suggestion. I cant wait to see the tables you're painting!!

Vicki just checking to see if you have an update?

It's been a busy summer, and I have been working on the whole downstairs of my home. We updated the kitchen, and replaced all the floors On my first floor. I still have a few things I want to do in this room, but I am so happy the way the room looks so far. I am looking for a large painting above the fireplace. I am looking for curtains on the wall behind sofa, an I am working on a old cabinet to use as a bar below the two pictures on tne wall, opposite the sofa. I love how the furniture and tv placement uses the whole room, instead of everything being pushed into one corner of the room. I am so thankful for all the good advise I received from this site. Sorry about the pictures being sideways. I could not figure out how to rotate them on this site

It looks great Vicki! So happy for you!! Now just kick back and enjoy it !! Thanks for the pictures!!
