Built banquette, need help from here

I had a carpenter in to build a corner banquette for my kitchen. He is going to come back and stain it the same color as the cabinets. Now i need help w cushion colors, size, shape of table and chairs. By the time this is all done it will not have been a cheap project and I dont want to mess it up.it measures 78 for the long side and 60 for the shorter. Please see pics of bench as well as rest of kitchen. Also want suggestions for new light. Appreciate any and all suggestions!!

view of kitchen is from the banquette.

OK, great. Glad to hear that. Whew! As to size of table, a pedestal type table works best with banquettes because they offer the most leg room under them. With our space, you might be able to do an oval white pedestal or wood tone, but your kitchen is light, so I think the white might work.

I was thinking how much I love round tables in kitchen areas this way, especially for coffee and the newspaper.

Round pedestal or rectangular trestle tables are the easiest to scoot in and out of with a bench or banquette.

This has minimal leg interference. Something like this might work with your chandelier and sizing. this is 34.25 W x 54 long, x 30" high. that is about the size you will need. You might put some blue painter tape on your floor and map out size that will fit in the space and then measure that. I laid out per your above measurements 78 on long side and 60 on short side. Then assumed 18" deep seats? With that, this size would roughly work. might be a tad long, but you can slide it toward the short side a little and it would work. You don't need a very bit table here.

What about a table like the dark wood one in the picture above? I like the white round one too! Any chair suggestions for each type of table? And thanks for the help! My dining table is a large dark wood trellis table. Would another dark wood table be too much?

    Trestle, not trellis!

And thanks, Flo, for all the measurements!

This is a take on a authentic French Bistro chair. This one is pricey but just giving you the "option" as a concept. They come in many variations and colors. I think something that repeats your black hardware in the kitchen, the black iron on the table and your chandelier would look best.

Just make sure you verify table size will work well in the space. With banquettes, you can situate the table in the best position for getting in and out easily, so keep that in mind.

I like the first chair the best. Going in a completely different direction, I like lucite chairs also. Im guessing they would go best with the white tulip table?

  • PRO

Yes, the Lucite works very well with the tulip based style. It also keeps your space looking a bit more open as well.

I have a banquette that the previous owners of the house built. The cushions have had the same cover for 30 years! They are the plastic/ leather fabric that one puts for boats, and they clean up nicely, and look great still!

Good to know because after putting so much worry into every decision around this, if someone spills something and ruins the cushion, I would not be happy. I think the sunbrella repels spills.

Sunbrella is a washable fabric that has improved greatly over the years. You can order samples so you can get the feel and look of whatever pattern or color you like.

Regarding the comment about the window ledge, you could do a back cushion also, so that the back does not feel cold by the window, and the ledge does not bother whoever is sitting there.

My husband built this banquette and table. I love my sunbrella cushions and various pillow choices. The table was custom made to fit the space and is easily moved to allow
seating. Extra chairs can be added for 2 more people. The cushions were pricey but well worth it. Perfect for this retired couple and guests to sit pre dinner and grandchildren to craft, etc.

Notice the table size. The space can deceive and you might think it can hold a larger table. So, do make sure you measure carefully before buying a new table. Returning items that size is a real pain.... :)

Very nice. You are lucky you have a handy husband! I really like the white tulip type table and ghost chairs but my family really, really does not. They want a rectangular or oval table. I def see that I will probably need a smaller table than I think I do. Ugh, so many decisions to make. And yes, its not easy to return a table so I need to get it right!

  • PRO

I think a rectangle would work best for you in this space, because then everyone seated can "reach" the table. When you start getting curves the table is further from the person seated, if you know what I mean. Just put the tape down or measure carefully and you will find just what you need. You might need to have something made for you. I would look in some local resale or antique shops. Loads of good buys in those shops right now. Maybe you could even find a unique iron base and then hubby could make a top. Have fun!

The carpenter that did the benches could probably make up a top for you. But just depends what size you want/need. Good luck. Going to be very nice. Post photos when you get it completed.

    I will, thanks!

With all due respect to Flo, I would only use a pedestal table in your nook. Otherwise, you will have trouble getting in and out with out hitting your knees or legs.
Why not make it easy on yourself? The benches look great!

we bought our table from a furniture store that carried a brand by the name of dinec. They have a website (dinec.com) where you can find many shapes and sizes, and make it your own with multiple choices for pedestals/ legs and finishes.

So Sunnydrew, you are saying that you think a round pedestal table would work best? And Grewa002, thank you for the site, I will check it out. This whole process is stressing me out!! If anyone wants to put some specific suggestions/ combinations here i would be very grateful. I really appreciate everyones advice!! I think that I will use one of sunbrella fabric suggestions above, they are all so pretty! Beyond that, im still unsure about table/ chairs...

If you look at the photos from VRA above you will see how clean it looks underneath with a round table.
I think you would do better to try a couple sizes and shapes to see what you like best.
Even if you use existing small tables with boards on them or what ever you can borrow to see what fits best.
With only 4 people using it mostly, there is not reason that a round table will not allow any one" elbow room"
I wanted to build a banquet on the wall of our small nook and saved a bunch of them in my idea books if you want to look, I think they are all still there.
Once we bought an old table with four legs on the corners, I gave up the dream and bought new chairs. In the end it is ok, but it was fun planning what I could do.
It will be nice for you to be able to sit at that nook with your legs up along it and coffee and read, eh?

If you don't sew, take the exact measurements of your banquette corner and have cushions made in a print fabric of your choice (which includes the main color of your kitchen). Pick a table, rectangle, oval or round. Add some kind of window treatment for light control, privacy, or simply for color or pattern (it can match your cushions or just match the colors in your cushions).

It needs to be blocked off the wall by at least 10"--12" or rebuilt entirely deeper so that you have physical room for any back cushions. That is butt depth, not overall seating depth that includes the needed back cushions that require an angle to be comfortable. Straight up and down backs are not comfortable at all. Skip even doing a base cushion until you get this fixed. It's a waste.

Any personal pop of color choice?

Bottom cushion can be different than back cushions. My friend had a geometric trellis pattern on bottom and then several feather pillows in a floral pattern and solids with trims for the back cushions. She didn't have room for a full back cushion. Prefer the toss pillows as long as they are soft for best support. You can also have a new roman shade (even faux) made for the window to pick up a coordinating pattern. If you do, mount just below ceiling height and have it come down just past your current one so you can still use that one if needed. Pedestal table was the way to go. Does it need to be turned so longest side of table follows longest side of bench? Choose fabric before light fixture.
