Chandelier

This chandelier was in the house when we moved in two months ago. Most of my furnishings are traditional leaning to simple cottage.

Keep it? Replace with something more traditional? Included pic of the adjacent LR and FP as the area is fairly open, separated by the front door and stairway to second floor. Haven't put up the painting yet, but they're formal-ish with gilt frames.

Also will be changing pale icy blue wall color soon to a pale neutral (Cream Fleece?), but that's another post.

TIA for any ideas and comments. Jo

    Thanks. Examples of minimalist modern?

Your pieces work beautifully in your new house! By the way I considered buying your last house and it too was perfect, but the commute was too long for my DH so we passed on your beautiful house and decided to add to our present house just a few towns south of Saybrook.

I do think you will find a perfect chandelier for your dining room. The one you have is not terrible so you can take your time till the right one finds you! Congrats on your new digs. The new space looks as lovely as your last one!

I think this one is too modern/contemporary. I see you have some paintings with gold frames....how about a traditional brass chandy? Or ORB? Your home looks so cozy and comfortable!

I really like your wood accents on the mantel and your lamps, maybe a wooden chandelier?

This is a brass one I am considering for my dining room.

Roarah, do I know you, or did you recognize my house from posts here on the forum? Small world. I miss a lot about the old house (dreamt about it last week) but don't miss the drafty windows and maintenance. Getting used to the new smaller house is taking a while.

    Joanie, thanks.

It's tough to shop online without being able to see fixtures up close. Might have to go to Hartford wholesale lighting stores for the best selection.

Posting at the same time. I did consider wood to make it less formal. I love natural materials, though actually crystal and brass are natural too now that I think about it, LOL. Maybe something airy like this? Too "old world"?

I'm keeping an open mind, but I'm not used to modern furnishings and wouldn't know where to start. I'd replace the dining furniture with something less formal, but can't justify it for a space we use so seldom.

Saybrook, I went to a showing by coincidence of you house and when I was there I suddenly recognized the living room from the old garden web and I thought it was yours but was not certain but now you mentioned you moved and I am pretty sure it was your historic house I toured a few times! Wish it was closer to New York...

Thanks for the ideas, and for the mock up!

Should have included this shot of the front entry chandelier right next to the dining room. I think this might dictate what I put in the DR.

    Here's a closeup.

Wow, so pretty! After seeing that beautiful piece in your foyer, I'd definitely go the traditional route over the dining table.

Love the foyer fixture. How about it above the table and a new one in the hall?

The foyer fixture is only 18" wide. The dining room is about 11 x 14 with an 8 ft. ceiling, and the table is 42" wide. I think I need something at least 24" wide or a bit wider?

As soon as I saw the foyer fixture I thought the same thing, perfect for the dining room. It's unfortunate that it's too small because I felt it was too ornate and not hefty enough for the foyer. You have a lovely home. Normally I dislike blue walls but like them in your living room, probably because it's a nice light shade, but also because it is counterbalanced by the warmth of the rug and furniture. I hope you'll post again when you've made some changes.

This one is about 26" wide but I like the general idea of it and it could go with your foyer light. And it's on sale at PB.

It is too bad about the size, I would probably have chosen something more lantern-like for the foyer myself.

Outside, that's a lot like the fixture I was looking at on another website.

Oh.....I really like the one you just posted!

Or I could take down the foyer fixture and expand my options for the dining room.

I almost posted that very light fixture when I saw your hall one! I love that!

The nine-light one is 31.5 inches wide. Too wide for my 42" table? There's also a 26.75 inch wide 6 light version in this collection, as well as a nice lantern I could use in the foyer. Too matchy?

Posting at the same time again, thanks for the mock-up.

I love the more traditional look like the one in your foyer. Your home is beautiful! I'm wondering if you know where the floral fabric is from on your chairs? I'm looking to reupholster some chairs and that looks perfect. Thank you!

Thanks, JaniceMarie. I'll have to dig through my files to find the chair fabric. They are slipcovers I had made up years ago. Really great to be able to pull them off and have them dry cleaned. I'll let you know if I find it.

This one has a simply shaped frame but plenty of crystals. Bronze finish metal. Is 26 inches wide enough for a 42 inch table?

I can't tell you how impressed I am that your home looks like this after only two months!

Thanks nosoccermom. We really just moved our stuff in and plunked it down. I just got the 2 inch blinds up a week or so ago, and the prints behind the sofa this week. the first floor of the house was in good shape when we bought it, but I do need to do some minor wall and ceiling repairs and repaint. Picking a color is going to be fun. Not.

If you are keeping the foyer fixture (I would), I would stick with gold/brass tones for the chandelier.

Yes, I think you're right. I wish this one came in gold or brass. I'm going to hit some of the local antique shops this weekend.

The other option would be to take the foyer down and refinish it. It's a bit of a bore putting the crystals back on, though. But that's only if it has exposed metal. Yours looks like part of it might be under the glass, in which case I would try to match the general tone rather than to change it.

I like that chandelier. Do you plan to keep the entry and DR painted the samea color? If not, I would not feel as limited to the same color family. My neutral entry has an antique brass fixture - a simple barrel lantern, and my blue DR has a crystal chandelier in antique silver. They also hang at different heights from different ceiling heights. I could have done a gold finish, but the antique silver is just gorgeous with the blue and it takes a back seat to the crystals. It just made everything right, and not once have I thought the two fixtures should be more the same.

Yes, will be repainting the same color throughout as there are no doorways separating except from the dining room to the kitchen.

I also thought about getting the bronze fixture and refinishing the metal in gold. Need to visit a lighting showroom to see some in person.

    refinishing the metal in gold

That might work, but often those bronze finishes are very rough, kind of psuedo-cast- iron to the touch, so make sure you can touch one and not just see it if you're thinking about doing that.

Also, as someone whose job involves hanging out with a lot of gilders, I can tell you that there is no finish you can do that is not real gold that will not turn color eventually, no matter how much you lacquer it, so this isn't going to be a one-time thing.

That one doesn't appear too rough to do a gold tone, but it isn't likely to look like polished brass. The gold finishes now are more of a matte, aged, satiny even lightly silvered look, and I think you could do something like that quite well. On the other hand, you are likely to find a lot of gold toned options once you get a chance to look. I've seen some really pretty ones when looking for something dark for my breakfast room and I keep thinking about how everyone was getting rid of anything brass or gold toned for so long (but not long enough for some -- I still see the builder specials in fake brass, even in some really nice homes).

    I like this one.

28 inches wide. I've never been to this website before, my neighbor told me about it. Really nice selection all in one place.

I have bought from Build.com - several Hudson Valley light fixtures - and have been extremely pleased with their service. I bought one for a half bath re-do within the past month.

thanks, my3dogs, I just ordered the Chesterfield it should be here in 2 or 3 days. Will post photos when I get it installed. Thinking of changing the foyer fixture to a lantern if I don't like the way they look together. can use the fancy one in the master bath or somewhere. Or sell it on CL.

OK, so I ordered the Chesterfield 28" fixture, and it arrived today. When I unpacked it, it was huge. I thought this width would work with my 44 inch wide table, but it really looks too big. I should have taken a picture of it sitting on the table, but I've already packed it back up to return.

I've seen various "rules" about chandelier width and height, etc., but I'm wondering what anyone's experience has been IRL.

    thanks

The dining room isn't rectangular, it has a jog in it for about half the width of the room. That is to say, part of the room is 11 x 12 and part of it is 11 x 14. If I use the size of the room to calculate, I would need a chandelier that is around 24 inches wide. If I use the width of the table and use 1/2 to 3/4 of the width, I would use a fixture that is between 22 and 33 inches, so I went for the 28 inch.

    Back to the drawing board.

    Ugh.

So I decided to keep the chandelier after all, and just finished putting it up. Still have to go out and buy bulbs, but I'm very happy with it. Simple, sparkly, and pretty, without being over the top, I think.

Everything about it is PERFECT! Wonderful choice, and it's got such an airy look that the size looks like it was made for that spot.

I agree, a really good choice. Your room looks great now, but I hope you don't mind my saying that the bookcase crowds the room a bit and takes away from the feeling of it being a dining room, perhaps also because it's a darker color than your beautiful dining set. It may just be the angle and the room may be fine with it, but the darker color still bothers me. If it were painted white it would recede into the background a bit more.

Thanks guys. I agree that the bookcase is not in the best spot. I don't think I'll paint it, because it's a really nice mahogany and has some nice detailing on it. Need to try to find another spot for it to give the dining room table some space.

The new house is smaller and I'm still working on getting things to fit.

It's a great choice. Love its airiness!

    Love that chandelier!

The size is good and the shape compliments the entry one without being matchy.

I am supposed to get delivery of a new breakfast room fixture tomorrow. Hope mine works too.

The size is perfect! Your room looks beautiful.
