A new rug

Hi....well I have a small studio in downtown Vancouver and had thought to do b&w but the couch is cream and I have yellows and red accents. The b&w rug is a cheap stand in. I need ideas, please! Grey? A splash of couloir to match other colour?

I would go with a natural fiber rug and keep any bold color in the accent pieces.

I quite like the black rug in your room. Is your side chair gray?

In the small space I wouldn't use a contrasting color on the floor. Stick with creams or neutral tones that blend in with your hardwood floor. Or maybe you could do without a rug.

Wow, interesting comments. Thank you. The floor isn't as nice as it looks in the pix. I didn't do hardwood...cheap laminate because it was a rental for a few years. Chair is a lovely black leather but I have a grey blanket on it. Trying to mute it and protect it from my cat. Pix is quite bright. Hmmmm so a coloured rug doesn't sound like a go for most of you. Damn.

Always start with the rug, so instead of matching the rug to pillows, be game to do new pillows with a bold, colorful new rug. I'd love to see a spot of color on the floor and often do that with clients, keeping furniture pieces quiet and then going color on the rugs and accents. Find a rug you love, maybe it will have a little black or cream to boot and then switch up the pillows. You can also let the artwork on your wall inspire you, or move that to another room and start fresh, up to you. Go BOLD!

I think a light grey and cream rug would work well -- you definitely should go larger with the new one. Good luck!

You were correct when you thought black should be incorporated in your scheme…nice leather chair.

Continue on with some black, some of your colors of choice, and the off white of the love seat, in your rug.

You have lots of windows and light. You need a rug with strong colors to ground the furniture.

Have you thought about a bench in front of the fireplace for additional seating?

I'm not against color. In fact, I think something like this would look fantastic.

If you really want color in the rug, you can do that, but just keep it subtle without a large or highly contrasting pattern. The example above is great. Find a size that is much larger than your current one, but still fits the angles of your space.

This has been so helpful! I am now back to a black, grey, white or cream rug to "ground" the room. I actually said that to myself the other day...it needs to ground the room! and I was thinking larger....wasn't sure if the couch on the rug would look funny, but from comments above I'm thinking that's ok. No room for the bench. Teeny tiny...I have a Murphy bed to maximize space...drop down desk makes a great office. The last piece was this rug and it has been driving me crazy. Thank you so much.

I think something "softer" would look great in your room. I think it would add some nice texture to your room.

I think a rug other than a light neutral makes the footprint of this relatively small and uniquely shaped space seem even smaller and busy. I would keep the attention on the higher levels of the interior (like the bold wall art) and the city view vs. the floor. I would also consider going more in the direction of a modern/contemporary style since the seating and coffee table are more consistent with that.

Thank you..I saw a black and white and grey rug today ....I think it could work. I will post a pix. I love some of the other ideas too, but I was focused on the black, white and grey today. Thanks so much everyone.

if it does not work or costs to much, let me know

Finally bought a rug. Now I think the sofa needs to go. It clashes with my coffee table anyway and has driven me mad. Do I get white or black sofa? Thank you!

either color would be fine, i don't have a problem with this one, but that is probably because of screen. looks great in there, can we get matching pillows, and some end tables with lamps now?

Thank you. I think if you saw it in the flesh it would be more noticeable. I've found a black sofa I like. I get what thou mean about end tables. Alas, the space is too small. Thanks again.

I will post a pix once I get black couch.

yeah! Have fun! If no table, how about a better floor lamp? don't worry they are reasonable. and i do like to put a drop of gold in such a room.

I like the top lamp but I have too much silver to introduce gold. Thanks tho!

you would be surprised not a lot just like a side table and one lamp with gold, makes a big difference.
