Planted some dahlias yesterday!

Well not really.lol. I went to my first Dahlia Society meeting this weekend (it was so nice to talk to people who's eyes don't glaze over when I talk about my precious plants) and they did a wonderful presentation on propogating dahlias.

I wasn't going to do it this year because it's only my 2nd year planting dahlias but I got a shipment of tubers very early (last month) from a catalog people warn about but it was the only place I could find this specific one. They are already sprouting (and some have rotted) so I decided to put them in some soil (I used the Fox Farm Ocean Forest that I had on hand.the PH is supposedly ideal for them)

I ordered a 4 foot light with one warm and one cool light) to put on them later this week and the experiments will begin :)

Anyone else starting their dahlias for propogating?

" people who's eyes don't glaze over" Ha ha! Yes, I can relate to
that! It is wonderful to actually have conversations you are interested
in, and have the person/s interested in the same subject. Glad you were
able to hook up with them. Don't be shy setting up 'garden dates' with
your favorite club members to see their gardens between club
get-togethers. Its a great way to continue those great conversations with no time limits or set agenda.

I started only the struggling tubers or ones I wanted to get cuttings off of... need to take the first cuttings next week, so I have to sort out the cords to turn on the lights soon.

Too early for the regular tubers for me. I'll get those going end of April so they aren't huge by planting time (end of May). Just don't have enough space inside.

Here's my setup in previous years... there are three shelves, but this only shows the bottom two.

This shows the shelves wrapped with Dollar Tree car windshield reflectors, to keep in the light and humidity...

That is such a great idea! I'll have to do that if mine ever make it. I never thought about a reflector of some kind. And maybe it will be another deterrent for my cats.

I like your idea of making garden dates :)
